Mechanical Technician – Chemical Manufacturing (Sunderland)\n\nA leading chemical manufacturing site in Sunderland is seeking an experienced Mechanical Technician to join its engineering team. This is a hands-on role suited to someone with strong mechanical expertise, experience in hazardous environments, and a commitment to high safety and operational standards.\n\nThe Role\n\nReporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and installing a wide range of mechanical equipment across the site. You’ll play a key role in ensuring plant reliability, safety, and efficiency, working both independently and alongside the wider engineering team.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\n * Carry out maintenance, repair, installation, and commissioning of mechanical plant equipment\n\n * Ensure all work complies with health, safety, environmental, and statutory requirements\n\n * Use CMMS systems to manage, record, and complete maintenance tasks\n\n * Diagnose faults, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective solutions\n\n * Support planned shutdowns, projects, and continuous improvement initiatives\n\n * Work within permit-to-work systems, ensuring proper risk assessments and isolations are in place\n\n * Assist with project work, including installation, commissioning, and handover of new equipment\n\n * Maintain high housekeeping standards and promote a positive safety culture\n\n * Report defects, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly\n\n * Support and mentor colleagues where required\n\nAbout You\n\n * Proven experience in a mechanical maintenance role within a chemical, process, or heavy industrial environment\n\n * Knowledge of hazardous area working practices (CompEx Mechanical )\n\n * Ideally experience working under COMAH regulations or similar high-hazard industries\n\n * Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation\n\n * Experience using CMMS systems for maintenance planning and reporting\n\n * Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and documentation\n\n * Proactive, flexible, and able to respond to breakdowns and operational needs\n\nWhat’s on Offer\n\n * Competitive salary and benefits package\n\n * Opportunity to work in a high-performing, safety-focused environment\n\n * Ongoing training and development\n\n * Exposure to complex plant systems and engineering projects\n\nAdditional Information\n\n * Flexibility required for overtime, call-outs, and shutdown periods\n\n * Involvement in emergency response and incident support as needed
