Mechanical Maintenance Engineer

 Location: Croydon

Salary: £43,000 per annum + OT

Nightshift Rota 19:00hrs to 04:45hrs



We are currently recruiting for a hands-on Mechanical Maintenance Engineer / Handyman to join a busy rail depot team working on rolling stock. This role is ideal for someone with a strong practical background in mechanical maintenance and handyman repairs, who takes pride in high-quality work and attention to detail.

You’ll be working in an Engineering team responsible for internal and external maintenance of train carriages — ensuring they are safe, clean, and finished to the highest standard.

 

Key Responsibilities of the Mechanical Maintenance Engineer / Handyman



Carry out day-to-day maintenance and repair work on train carriages

Surface preparation, sanding, filling, interiors and exteriors of rolling stock

Fitting and replacing fixtures, trim panels, door seals, strip fittings, and flooring

Minor carpentry, sealing, and general fabrication tasks

Use of hand and power tools to complete planned and reactive tasks

Assisting engineering teams with depot-based maintenance programmes

Ensuring all work is carried out safely and in line with rail industry standards 

Skills & Experience Required of the Mechanical Maintenance Engineer / Handyman



Previous experience in a maintenance, handyman or light engineering role

Strong practical skills

Confident using power tools for strip fitting and basic installations

Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a safety-critical environment

Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality work

Willingness to work in a rail depot environment (full training and PPE provided)
