JOB SUMMARY

Supervisor and contributor to a talented and experienced Mechanical Engineering team.  The team is responsible for mechanical design in support of developing non-destructive test (NDT) equipment and associated automated delivery systems.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Oversees a team of mechanical engineers that design, analyze, and maintain mechanical components and systems to meet specified requirements and standards.
  • Utilizes CAD software and other design and modeling tools to plan, develop, and improve mechanical parts or components and communicate conceptual designs and specifications to stakeholders.
  • Oversees prototype testing to evaluate the performance, reliability, and safety of mechanical systems and reviews data and analysis to develop improvements.
  • Implements departmental policies and procedures to delegate workflow and ensure projects are completed on time and within required specifications and quality standards.
  • Ensures projects follow organizational best practices for design, prototyping, and testing.
  • Mechanical designer with technical proficiency in developing prototype solutions and guiding implementation.
  • Implement designs within Zetec new product development process; responsibilities include specification, detailed design documentation (e.g., schematic, bill of material, cost), design review, prototyping, test support, and hand-off to production.
  • Design applications are diverse and include machined, injection molded, and 3D printed parts.
  • Designs include integration with servo motor/encoder systems, advanced sensors, pneumatic actuation, diverse electronics packaging, and thermal management.
  • Ongoing engineering support of released products including design enhancements, customizations, cost reductions, and part obsolescence mitigation.
  • Designs to meet industry standard compliance as required by the project (e.g., CE Mechanical Safety, environmental, and RoHS).
  • Generating test reports to ensure completed prototypes have been appropriately tested to the intended design goals.
  • Interfaces with other departments and customers on design, development, and/or product improvement issues.
  • Research and incorporates new technology in design and redesign of components, products, and equipment.
  • Provides proposal, estimated cost and delivery information needed for quotes and project planning, as requested.
  • Evaluates technical risks and mitigation options for proposed design requirements.
  • Stay current with industry related codes, customer agreements and Zetec Quality Assurance manuals.
  • Leads design reviews and drives consensus on the decisions needed to design a product that meets all customer specifications in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with product sponsors to define requirements.
  • Occasional extended hours may be required to fulfill the requirements of this position.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and decision-making abilities.

  • Other duties as required in support of the department and the company.

 

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • This job has direct supervisory responsibilities over the Mechanical Engineers on the design team.
  • Performance Management: Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback for growth and course correction.
  • Team Leadership: Motivate, mentor, and train staff to improve performance and career development.
  • Team Process: maintain Work Instructions and other like documentation that drives the team to better performance.
  • Review and coordinate employee timecard management, this includes but not limited to: daily timecard review, vacation requests, coordination of coverage, etc.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Aptitude for problem-solving and hands-on experience with electro-mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of project management principles.
  • A demonstrated ability to work in a cross functional team environment.
  • Effective communicator capable of adapting written and verbal communications to suit a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and duties.
  • Ability to estimate part & assembly costs throughout different stages of product development.
  • Experience creating/incorporating design for cost (DFC), design for manufacturability (DFM), and design for assembly (DFA).
  • Experience with CAD-level FEA tools.
  • Experience using 3D CAD modeling tools, e.g. PRO/E, Solid Works, Solid Edge, Catia.
  • Experience with heat treatment & plating techniques for improving wear & strength characteristics.
  • Experience with environmental testing.
  • Some supervisory experience or experience leading/directing a team

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering required.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years’ industry experience in design, development, analysis, and delivery of hardware products is .
  • Experience overseeing or leading a team

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Engineer In Training certificate.

 

SKILLS

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English

  • Able to perform essential duties of the job while wearing PPE required for the job. Such PPE may include closed toe and closed heel shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, toe guards, face shields, etc.

  • Travel as needed (up to 5%).
