Mechanical Design Engineer – Plymouth
Location: Plymouth, Devon
Hours: 50 hours per week (07:00 – 17:00)
Contract: Long-term project
Clearance: BPSS required (UK for past 5 years)
About the Role
Carmichael UK is recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a major infrastructure redevelopment project at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth. This is an exciting opportunity to work on one of the UK’s most significant and complex engineering schemes within a highly regulated environment.
You’ll play a key role in supporting the design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical systems for critical infrastructure, working closely with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders on-site.
Key Responsibilities
Support the development and review of mechanical design documentation, specifications, and drawings.
Work collaboratively with consultants, contractors, and client representatives to ensure coordinated design delivery.
Attend design and progress meetings both on-site and off-site.
Provide technical input and problem-solving support for mechanical systems and installations.
Ensure all designs comply with relevant standards, regulations, and project specifications.
Liaise with electrical, civil, structural, and architectural teams to maintain integrated design solutions.
Contribute to innovative mechanical engineering solutions within a highly controlled and safety-critical environment.
This is a hybrid role, typically working four days per week on-site and one day remotely.
About You
Qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (HNC, BSc, MSc, BEng, or MEng).
Proven experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer within building services or infrastructure projects.
Sound understanding of design documentation and mechanical systems such as HVAC, pipework, and plant systems.
Familiarity with software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Hevacomp (or similar).
Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
Desirable:
Knowledge of RIBA and BSRIA Design Stage Deliverables.
Experience working in defence, nuclear, or other highly regulated industries.
Security Requirements
Due to the nature of the site, BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) clearance is required.
