Mechanical Design Engineer | Robotics & Autonomous Systems\n\nLocation: Birmingham\n\nSalary: up to £45K\n\nFull time | Permanent\n\nDesign hardware that operates where failure isn't an option\n\nAre you a Mechanical Design Engineer working on drones, UAVs, robotics or advanced electromechanical products - and starting to feel boxed in by incremental upgrades or overly siloed roles?\n\nThis is an opportunity to take full ownership of real, mission‑critical hardware, from concept through to manufacture, in a fast‑moving engineering team building autonomous inspection systems for extreme environments.\n\nWhat You'll Be Working On\n\nYou'll be designing field‑deployable robotic hardware that must survive:\n\nHarsh weather and corrosive environments\nConfined, high‑risk industrial spaces\nHigh consequence failure scenariosYour role spans the entire product lifecycle:\n\nConcept design, prototyping and validation\nDetailed mechanical design and DFM-ready drawings\nBOM / CBOM ownership and engineering change control\nClose collaboration with electronics and software engineersThis is a hands‑on, high‑impact role - your designs won't sit on a shelf.\n\nThis Role Is Ideal For Engineers With Experience In:\n\nDrones / UAVs / robotics / autonomous systems\nLightweight structures and complex assemblies\nElectromechanical products with tight tolerances\nDesigning for reliability, serviceability and manufacture\nProducts that leave the lab and go into the real worldWhat You'll Bring\n\n2+ years' experience in a mechanical engineering role\nStrong SolidWorks capability\nProven mechanical design experience on physical products (portfolio required)\nGood DFM discipline and documentation practices\nExperience owning BOMs and engineering changes\nEnough electronics/software awareness to design intelligently alongside other disciplinesNice To Have (Not Essential)\n\nTaking products from R&D into manufacture\nExperience with harsh environments (IP ratings, corrosion, impact)\nBackground in aerospace, defence, energy or advanced robotics\nCable management, tethered systems or deployable mechanisms
