San Francisco Boatworks is a full-service boatyard on the San Francisco waterfront. We service recreational and commercial vessels with a focus on quality workmanship, safety, and fast turnaround.
Position
We’re hiring an experienced Marine Mechanic to diagnose, service, and repair gasoline and diesel inboard and outboard engines, as well as related marine systems. This is a full-time, on-site role at our boatyard.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain gas and diesel inboard/outboard engines (Yamaha, Mercury, Honda, Suzuki, Volvo Penta, Yanmar, Cummins, Caterpillar, etc.).
- Perform preventive maintenance: oil/filters, cooling systems, fuel systems, ignition, timing, belts, and valve adjustments.
- Troubleshoot fuel delivery, electrical, ECM/diagnostic codes, and mechanical issues.
- Service propulsion and running gear: shafts, struts, props, seals, transmissions/sterndrives.
- Inspect and repair exhaust, cooling, and ventilation systems; replace hoses, clamps, and heat exchangers.
- Install and commission repowers, controls, gauges, and engine wiring harnesses.
- Conduct sea trials, document findings, and complete work orders accurately.
- Collaborate with yard crew for haul outs/launches; follow safety and environmental standards (OSHA, ABYC best practices).
- Communicate clearly with customers and the service manager on scope, timing, and recommendations.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years professional experience as a Marine Mechanic/Technician.
- Proven hands-on expertise with both gasoline and diesel engines— inboard and outboard.
- Strong diagnostics using manuals, wiring diagrams, and scan tools; ability to interpret fault codes.
- Proficiency with fuel, cooling, ignition, and charging systems; basic 12V DC troubleshooting.
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work outdoors, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- Valid driver’s license and authorization to work in the U.S.

- OEM certifications (Yamaha, Mercury, Honda, Suzuki, Volvo Penta, Yanmar, Cummins, CAT).
- ABYC certifications (Marine Systems/Electrical) or equivalent.
- Experience with transmissions/sterndrives, shaft alignments, and propeller work.
- Basic NMEA 2000 knowledge and marine electronics integration.
- Welding/fabrication or fiberglass skills.
Schedule and Pay
- Full-time, on-site. Occasional overtime/weekend work as needed.
- Competitive hourly wage DOE;
