Scope of Position
The Manager of Engineering will lead and oversee all engineering functions within a growing construction and precast concrete organization. This role is responsible for ensuring technical excellence, operational efficiency, and continuous innovation across all engineering projects. The Manager of Engineering will supervise and mentor a team of engineers, manage project workflow, support business development efforts, and serve as a key technical authority in both internal and client-facing settings.
This position requires a strategic, hands-on leader who combines strong technical expertise in structural and civil engineering with the ability to guide teams, manage complex projects, and collaborate effectively across departments.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Team Management
- Report directly to the Director of Engineering and provide regular updates on engineering performance and project progress.
- Lead, mentor, and coach the engineering team to achieve department goals and foster professional development.
- Manage engineering staff schedules, workloads, and priorities to ensure timely completion of deliverables.
- Conduct one-on-one meetings and performance evaluations for direct reports.
- Oversee quality control for all engineering outputs to ensure compliance with company standards and industry best practices.
- Direct and grow the company’s Research & Development program to promote innovation and continuous improvement.
- Review, sign, and seal engineering documents as required.
Project and Technical Oversight
- Receive new projects from the Sales Team and delegate assignments to appropriate engineering personnel.
- Coordinate project schedules and deliverables with Sales, Operations, and Production teams.
- Lead engineering workload meetings and ensure effective project tracking and reporting.
- Provide constructability reviews and technical support during early project phases to enhance efficiency and deliver greater client value.
- Maintain accurate project documentation, communication, and forecasting within the company's CRM systems.
- Support the Sales Team by offering technical expertise during proposal development, presentations, and client discussions.
- Provide technical leadership in addressing construction or field issues that arise during project execution.
Engineering and Design Responsibilities
- Perform and review structural calculations for precast and concrete components, foundations, and support structures.
- Prepare and oversee design calculation packages, including:
- Foundation design (spread footings, pile systems, helical/micro piles, FRP composites, etc.)
- Precast and reinforced concrete design
- Railing, retaining wall, and connection design
- Apply relevant codes and standards (AASHTO, ACI, ASCE, and other applicable building codes).
- Coordinate closely with drafting teams to ensure accurate and complete engineering drawings.
- Conduct peer reviews for design accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
- Utilize AutoCAD and adhere to established company CAD standards, including making minor drawing revisions as needed.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Serve as a liaison between Engineering, Sales, and Production departments to ensure clear communication and efficient project delivery.
- Provide weekly forecasts and project updates to Sales and Operations leadership.
- Offer technical insight and support to Sales during proposal and bid phases.
- Partner with Operations and Manufacturing to ensure designs are practical, efficient, and cost-effective.
Industry Engagement and Business Development
- Represent the company as a technical expert at trade shows, industry events, and professional seminars.
- Develop and strengthen partnerships with contractors, consultants, owners, and precast suppliers.
- Participate in client meetings and design presentations to promote engineering solutions and showcase the company's capabilities.
- Contribute to strategic business planning and promote the company’s engineering excellence within the industry.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master’s degree ).
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) required.
- Minimum of 8–10 years of experience in structural or civil engineering within the construction or precast industry.
- Proven experience leading and mentoring an engineering team.
- Strong knowledge of design codes and standards, including AASHTO, ACI, and ASCE.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and familiarity with CRM tools such as Salesforce.
- Exceptional communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and provide technical expertise in business development settings.
