Maintenance Technician
Engineering and Public Works
The City currently has a position open for Maintenance Technician. This position operates, maneuvers, navigates, or drives mechanical equipment and vehicles. Performs manual labor of more than ordinary difficulty which often involves the use of acquired skills. This is a collective bargaining unit position. The probation period for this position is 90 calendar days.
The position starts with a pay rate of $24.81 per hour. The normal schedule is 7:30 a.m. 4:00 p.m., Monday Friday. The regular reporting location will be at the Engineering and Public Works Department, 30 Curran Drive, Athens, OH 45701. A Civil Service Exam will be administered for this position on Friday, January 16th, 2026 at 12:30 p.m. at the Athens Community center, 701 E. State St., Athens, OH 45701. Applicants must show a valid, government issued Picture ID for entry to the test. Applicants must achieve a minimum passing score of 70% on the exam. To be eligible for military credit, a copy of the DD-214 showing honorable discharge must be submitted with the application packet. Members of the Guard are also eligible for 15% credit. Only one type of military credit will be applied to a passing grade. No further notice will be given about the exam. Essential Functions:
- Operates heavy trucks and heavy equipment and performs normal clean and maintenance of equipment as required.
- Makes repairs to sewer and water lines.
- Digs and braces ditches.
- Erects barricades and signs.
- Raises and lowers manholes.
- Performs masonry work.
- Builds forms and works as concrete finisher.
- Makes water and sewer taps.
- Installs, reads and repairs water meters.
- Performs grading and seeding to restore water and sewer break holes.
- Keeps records pertaining to water and sewer construction, installation, repair, personnel, job costs, etc.
- Installs new water and sewer lines.
- Repairs and replaces fire hydrants.
- Paves and/or patches walkways and roadways.
- Locates position of valves, meters, manholes, etc. using hand held GPS unit
- Reads location of items using hand-held GPS for GIS mapping system.
- Assumes additional responsibilities and performs other related duties as required.
Position Qualifications:
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio Commercial Drivers License with the endorsements necessary to operate the equipment assigned.
- Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
- Prior experience in utilities construction and sewer maintenance is required.
- A minimum of one-year related work experience is necessary
Position Specifications
- Skill in the operation of vehicles and heavy equipment is required as well as
- knowledge of the principles on which the engine operates.
- Duties are often performed under varying climatic conditions for extended periods of time.
- May be required to lift up to approximately 150 pounds.
- Mental and visual alertness, and sound judgment on the part of a utilities maintenance technician are required for safe operation of equipment.
- Must perform duties with minimum amount of supervision, must be self-motivated.
- A driving record acceptable to the City.
- The City provides a seven day per week and twenty-four hours per day service, and therefore, certain employees may be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and are subject to emergency call-outs.
The City may consider other equivalent combinations of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
New hires are required to be certified in First Aid and CPR, no later than the date of the next available class, making this position occupationally-at-risk for bloodborne pathogens.
This position is subject to mandatory alcohol and drug testing in accordance with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 (Pub.L.No. 102-143)
