Job DescriptionJob Description

Position Overview

Northwest Passage is seeking a Maintenance Technician to support the performance, reliability, and long-term upkeep of a multi-site campus environment. This role is designed for a high-ownership, hands-on operator who takes pride in their work and can manage both day-to-day maintenance and more complex facility needs.

We’re hiring with a long-term view, as anticipated retirements will create opportunities for increased responsibility over time.

Our facilities include four campuses (two in Webster, one in Frederic, and a clinic in New Richmond) along with thirteen additional housing units across several buildings, totaling 20+ buildings across residential, program, and housing environments.

While this is an individual contributor role, it requires a strong team-first mindset. You will work closely with other maintenance staff, leadership, program teams, and external contractors. Success depends on communication, collaboration, and contributing to a culture of shared responsibility.

We’re looking for someone who can identify issues early, take initiative, and deliver high-quality work across a range of maintenance tasks.

This role operates in a dynamic environment and where priorities can shift quickly. Flexibility, sound judgment, and the ability to adapt in real time are essential.

Schedule: Monday–Friday, daytime hours. Based in Webster 3 days/week and Frederic 2 days/week, with support to other locations as needed. Participation in a shared on‑call rotation for emergency contact is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and routine inspections across buildings and grounds
  • Proactively identify and address maintenance issues before they escalate
  • Complete general construction, remodeling, and improvement projects as needed
  • Perform repairs across plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and building systems (within scope of experience)
  • Maintain compliance with Wisconsin Administrative Code DCF 52 physical environment standards
  • Support groundskeeping, seasonal maintenance, and snow removal operations
  • Partner with leadership, program staff, and vendors to prioritize and execute maintenance needs
  • Communicate clearly with non-maintenance staff to understand issues and deliver solutions
  • Work collaboratively with other maintenance team members to coordinate work, share knowledge, and maintain consistency across campuses
  • Demonstrate flexibility in responding to changing priorities and time-sensitive facility needs
  • Coordinate and oversee external contractors and vendors when specialized work is required
  • Maintain organized workspaces, tools, and materials to ensure efficiency and safety
  • Contribute to maintaining a consistent standard of quality across all campuses and housing units

What We’re Looking For

This role is best suited for someone who:

  • Takes ownership and follows through without needing direction
  • Is a strong team player who communicates well and works effectively with others
  • Is a people-oriented operator—comfortable interacting with staff, leadership, and partners across the organization
  • Is flexible and responsive, able to adjust quickly as priorities shift
  • Brings strong problem-solving skills and can act decisively in the moment
  • Takes pride in craftsmanship and doing work the right way
  • Is comfortable working across a variety of buildings, systems, and environments
  • Is motivated to grow into a long-term, high-impact role

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or degree
  • 5–7 years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field, with demonstrated progression in responsibility
  • Working knowledge of general construction, plumbing, electrical, and/or HVAC systems
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve maintenance issues independently
  • Experience taking ownership of projects, facilities, or systems beyond basic task execution
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work across multiple buildings and environments
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Valid driver’s license required

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

  • Work performed indoors and outdoors across multiple sites
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing ladders, bending, and lifting
  • Ability to lift 50–100 lbs as needed
  • Exposure to tools, equipment, and maintenance-related materials

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is competitive and aligned with experience, skill level, and ownership in the role, with strong upside for high performers.

  • Company vehicle provided (including commuting use; fuel and insurance covered)
  • Annual clothing stipend ($500)
  • Cell phone stipend
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance (no deductible health plan)
  • 403(b) retirement plan with discretionary employer match
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Paid parental leave
  • Employer-paid short-term and life insurance
  • Voluntary benefits (long-term , supplemental coverage)
  • Employee Assistance Program (mental health support)
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
  • Longevity benefit
