About the Role
A well-established orchestral brand is seeking a full-time, in-office Luthier / String Instrument Repair Technician to join their collaborative workshop team in Ann Arbor, MI. This is a permanent, in-house role—not freelance, contract, remote, or hybrid—perfect for artisans passionate about orchestral craftsmanship.
This role focuses on the repair, setup, and restoration of violins, violas, cellos, and similar orchestral string instruments. Whether you are an apprentice-level technician eager to develop your craft or a seasoned luthier, you’ll have the opportunity to grow in a hands-on, team-driven environment. Compensation varies based on skill level, craftsmanship, and ability to repair and restore orchestral string instruments.
What You’ll Do

Inspect, diagnose, and repair structural, mechanical, and cosmetic issues

Complete high-quality setups and adjustments on violins, violas, cellos, and similar instruments, including soundposts, bridges, pegs, tailpieces, and fittings

String, tune, clean, and polish instruments to professional standards

Accurately document repairs and maintenance tasks

Maintain a clean, organized bench and tool workspace

Collaborate within a team-focused workshop, contributing to quality craftsmanship and production goals

Participate in training and mentorship programs to develop or refine your luthier skills
Who We’re Looking For

Skilled with hand tools and experienced in workshop environments

Manual dexterity and fine attention to detail are essential

Physically able to lift up to 30 pounds and stay focused during hands-on tasks

Positive, team-oriented attitude, open to feedback and continual learning

Experience working with violins, violas, and cellos is highly valued
Qualifications

Hands-on experience in string instrument repair or setup

Formal luthiery training or related certification

Musical background, particularly familiarity with violin-family instruments

Previous work in repair shops, rental programs, or music retail environments is a plus
Compensation

Pay will vary based on skill level and experience
