Lead Test Engineer\n\nLocation: Birmingham\n\nSalary: Negotiable\n\nRole Overview\n\nMcGeoch Technology Ltd is seeking an experienced and proactive Lead Test Engineer to lead all product and system testing activities within our Birmingham manufacturing facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and executing testing activities across a diverse range of products, ensuring compliance with customer specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.\n\nThe Lead Test Engineer will provide technical leadership for the test function, overseeing test planning, test procedures, fault diagnosis, and continuous improvement initiatives. The role will involve close collaboration with Engineering, Production, Quality, external test houses, and customers to ensure products are delivered safely, reliably, and to the highest standards.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nLead and manage all product and system testing activities across the manufacturing facility.\nDevelop, implement, and continuously improve test strategies, procedures, and processes.\nPlan, coordinate, and prioritise testing activities to support production schedules and customer delivery requirements.\nProvide technical leadership and support to production and assembly personnel during testing and fault-finding activities.\nPerform and oversee functional, electrical, environmental, and system testing on company products and assemblies.\nEnsure all testing is conducted safely and in accordance with company procedures, customer specifications, and quality standards.\nInterpret engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, specifications, and test requirements.\nDiagnose faults, identify root causes, and implement effective corrective actions.\nLiaise with external test houses to schedule qualification, certification, and compliance testing activities.\nLead Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Customer Witness Tests for company products and systems.\nAct as the primary technical point of contact for all test-related matters.\nEnsure all test equipment is maintained, calibrated, and suitable for use.\nProduce and review test reports, non-conformance reports, and technical documentation.\nSupport product validation, commissioning, and customer support activities where required.\nDrive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality, reliability, and manufacturing efficiency in conjunction with the continuous improvement Manager.\nEnsure compliance with applicable industry standards, company quality procedures, and Health & Safety requirements.\nEssential Skills and Experience\n\nDegree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering.\nSignificant experience in a manufacturing test engineering environment.\nProven experience leading testing activities within a regulated industry.\nStrong electrical and electronic fault-finding capability.\nAbility to interpret complex engineering drawings and technical documentation.\nExperience using a wide range of electrical and electronic test equipment.\nExcellent problem-solving, analytical, and organisational skills.\nStrong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with customers and stakeholders.\nExperience leading Factory Acceptance Tests and customer witness activities.\nEssential Technical \n\nKnowledge of low voltage switchgear, inverter, drives and VFD’s.\nTrained to work on 440V 3phase power systems and the ability to run motor or simulated load tests including electrical power connections to inverters and VSD’s.\nFamiliar with the equipment and test procedures for carrying out but not limited to:\nDielectric Withstand Voltage (DWV) testing (HiPOT to 4KV)\nInsulation test\nLow impedance\nFunctional performance tests with bespoke test equipment for which protocols for communication (Profinet) and process are required.\nFamiliar with an array of sensors (temperature, pressure, flow, strain gauges, etc) for monitoring purposes and the logging of data of through High-speed capture devices.\nWorked to Aerospace, Defence and Marine Standards and familiar with their test methods and requirements.\nExperience on Low Voltage (LV) switchgear & control gear assemblies, to BS EN 61439 and also a working knowledge of 18th Edition IET electrical standards and IEC standards is desirable.\nDesirable Skills and Experience\n\nExperience within Defence, Marine, Aerospace, Rail, Oil & Gas, or ATEX-regulated industries.\nKnowledge of ATEX/IECEx standards and hazardous area equipment.\nFamiliarity with ISO 9001 and quality management systems.\nExperience managing external certification and test organisations.\nUnderstanding of CE/UKCA product compliance requirements.\nPrevious supervisory or team leadership experience.\nSecurity Requirements\n\nDue to the nature of the products manufactured and associated security requirements, applications will only be considered from British Nationals.
