Lead Scientist

Job Description

Scientific Lead

Salary - £80,000 - 95,000

Location: Hybrid (3 days / week in London, Liverpool Street)

Above & Beyond is proud to be partnering with CUR8

CUR8 is looking for an expert in carbon removals to own our due diligence process for assessing and reviewing different CDR methodologies.

We are looking for someone with a strong academic background in Climate Science and Carbon Removals - either in Chemistry or Natural Sciences. Who is keen to work in a high-impact tech start-up environment.

This is a hybrid role working 3 days / week from our offices near Liverpool Street / Shoreditch.

About CUR8:

The science is clear: even if we do everything else right on reducing emissions, the world needs to remove 200 Gigatonnes of carbon from the atmosphere by 2050.

We have decades of experience working with the leading climate change actors, which we combine with deep technical and business expertise to build the carbon removals industry faster than ever before. We partner with providers of the highest quality carbon removals, and we don’t stop there; developing carbon markets creates an unprecedented opportunity for the creation of innovation, value, equity, and jobs across the world. We believe the supply side of carbon removals is the biggest opportunity for our business and for the world.

We’re systemic thinkers. Together with our sister NGO, Rethinking Removals, we collaborate with the entire carbon removals ecosystem, across suppliers, buyers, policymakers, and narrative setters, together to develop and invest in future projects to make sure there are enough carbon removals in 1, 5, 10 and 25 years time.

About the role:

We’re looking for a Scientific Lead to own our due diligence processes for different carbon removal methodologies, and maintain the scientific rigour that sets us apart in the market.

You will be researching and staying up to date with any advancements and developments in current and new carbon removal methodologies - understanding the standards, ratings, risks and efficacies of both natural and technological solutions.

As well as, reviewing and assessing individual carbon projects and running them through our due diligence process to fully assess their immediacy, efficacy and permanence.

You will work closely with teams across the business including sales, marketing, design, engineering and product to ensure that scientific rigour and expert knowledge underpins everything we do.

You will act as a key point of contact for scientific advisors and external scientific communities - as well as representing the business through marketing, webinars and events, as required.

You will help inform our strategy to achieve maximum commercial and climate outcomes, always balancing what’s good for the company, the ecosystem, and the planet

About our team:

We’re a small but mighty team; between us, we’ve built, scaled, and sold successful tech businesses, advised governments on net zero, shaped global narratives at Nature, New Scientist, and the BBC, led startup support and investments at Google, invested in and built carbon removal startups. Oh, and done the TED talk about carbon removal (haven’t you seen it yet?)

Requirements:

  • A strong academic background in Chemistry or Natural Sciences with a specific focus on Environmental Science or Carbon Removal.
  • Ideally you will have worked either in a commercial setting or on a collaborative commercial project through a research institute.
  • Strong expertise in researching and assessing technical and / or nature based solutions for carbon removal.
  • Scientific research skills in developing theses.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment.
  • Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • You’re happy to lead and take initiative in an ambitious, fast-paced, and ambiguous environment.
  • You thrive in both competition and collaboration; within the team, with the partners you manage, and with the wider ecosystem. You’re able to currently identify when to get ahead and when to share.

Benefits:

  • With a little bit of luck, we’ll save the planet (pretty good, isn’t it)
  • But seriously. Every time we transact, the world gets a little better
  • We’ll treat you with dignity; across competitive compensation, meaningful equity, generous time off, and a culture that’s inclusive for parents and respectful of boundaries (no 3am emails!)
  • We share a lovely bright office in Shoreditch/Liverpool Street with abundant free coffee and snacks. We are office-based three days a week and let you work from anywhere two days a week
  • Worried about your personal carbon footprint? We’ll make a meaningful contribution to removing it.
  • We’re building a collaborative culture that celebrates our differences and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
  • CUR8 is an equal-opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
