Our work is focused on unlocking scalable, clean energy through breakthrough approaches, supported by world-class computational capabilities and innovative engineering.\n\nAlongside our core mission, we collaborate with leading organisations across advanced industries, applying our proprietary simulation tools and technologies to solve complex, high-impact challenges.\n\nThis is a rare opportunity to join a highly skilled, mission-driven team working at the forefront of science and engineering innovation.\n\nThe Role\n\nWe're seeking a Lead HPC Engineer - or an experienced Senior HPC Engineer ready to step up - to take ownership of a large-scale, high-performance computing environment.\n\nYou'll support and evolve an HPC cluster of over 10,000 cores, ensuring reliability, performance, and scalability for workloads ranging from single high-precision runs to thousands of parallel simulations.\n\nWorking within the Software & HPC Engineering team, you'll collaborate closely with computational scientists, data engineers, and IT specialists to deliver a robust platform that underpins cutting-edge research and development.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nMaintain and optimise HPC hardware, working with external vendors where required\nManage core system software and ensure platform stability\nMonitor performance, troubleshoot issues, and drive continuous improvements\nOversee backups of critical data and system configurations\nSchedule and perform maintenance aligned with user activity\nProfile workloads and enhance system efficiency\nCommunicate system status, updates, and major issues to stakeholders\nCapture user requirements and contribute to upgrade and capacity planning\nSupport procurement processes and vendor negotiations\nProduce clear documentation for both technical teams and end users\nCollaborate across engineering and IT teams on shared infrastructure\n\nCurrent Environment\n\nYou'll be working with a modern HPC stack, including:\n\nLarge-scale multi-vendor server infrastructure (AMD EPYC, Intel Xeon)\nHigh-speed networking (100Gb LAN) and high-performance storage systems\nLinux-based environments (AlmaLinux, Ubuntu)\nDistributed file systems (Lustre, GlusterFS, NFS)\nHPC tooling including Slurm, Ansible, and monitoring frameworks\nDevelopment ecosystems supporting C++, Fortran, MPI, and Python\n\nAbout You\n\nEssential:\n\nDegree in Computer Science (or equivalent experience)\nStrong expertise in Linux, HPC systems, storage, and networking\nExperience with MPI and scientific computing environments (C++, Fortran)\nFamiliarity with job schedulers and workload management systems\nScripting skills (Shell, Python) and version control (Git)\nAbility to design, implement, and support complex HPC systems\nStrong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills\nExcellent communication and collaboration abilitiesDesirable:\n\nDeep expertise in HPC optimisation and performance profiling\nExperience with configuration management tools (e.g. Ansible)\nKnowledge of containerisation (e.g.
