Landfill Heavy Equipment Operator

Position Purpose
Under general direction, operates various types of heavy equipment, such as road graders, end loaders, scrapers, compactor, track-hoes, heavy trucks, and other assigned pieces of equipment.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties
- Operates heavy equipment to spread and compact refuse and cover with layers of dirt or other cover.
- Landscapes rough terrain.
- Maintains grade lines as established for street and road construction.
- Operates fuel truck, water truck, roll-off truck, and dump truck for various applications.
- Assists in maintenance of equipment and trucks, including checking engine oil, hydraulic systems, brakes, and other major components, such as transmissions.
- Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
Training and Experience
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an equivalent GED certificate, supplemented by experience in operation of heavy equipment and heavy trucks.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid Class B CDL license with air brakes endorsement.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Safety-sensitive position is subject to passing a pre-employment drug screen test.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of heavy equipment operation.
- Working knowledge of dump truck operations.
- Working knowledge of environmental regulations pertaining to landfill and compost facilities operations.
- Working knowledge of traffic laws and ordinances.
- Ability to operate equipment and trucks skillfully and safely.
- Ability to detect needed repairs and to make simple adjustments to equipment and trucks.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the general public.
