Job : Lab Technician I
Location: Jackson, MI (Onsite)
Department: Non-destructive Testing (NDT) Group
Positions: 2 Openings
Work Schedule: 53–55 hours/week on average (Some OT & occasional weekend work; weekends mostly volunteer)
Overview:
The Lab Technician I will support CMS Energy’s Non-destructive Testing (NDT) group, a compliance-based inspection team of ~23 technicians. This role involves traveling across Michigan’s Lower Peninsula to inspect new construction, pipelines, pipeline welds, structural welds, bucket trucks, lift devices, and wind turbines. The technician will work with radiation and conduct radiography as part of daily operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Travel daily to various job sites across the Lower Peninsula of Michigan for inspections.
- Work according to schedules provided by the dispatcher/scheduler.
- Perform non-destructive testing tasks on pipelines, pipeline welds, structural welds, and industrial equipment.
- Inspect bucket trucks, lift devices, and windmill components.
- Work with radioactive materials and operate radiography equipment safely.
- Follow strict QA/QC procedures, acceptance criteria, compliance codes, and safety protocols.
- Work in teams of two and operate a company vehicle while on-site for work.
- Complete required documentation, inspection reports, and compliance forms accurately.
- Maintain equipment, tools, and safety gear.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED (minimum requirement).
- Reliable transportation; must be comfortable driving long distances daily.
- Willingness to drive client/company vehicles as part of job duties.
- Ability to travel extensively across Michigan (role is 100% travel within state).
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow detailed procedures.
- Prior experience in Quality Assurance (QA) or Quality Control (QC) if no lab experience.
- Strong math skills (required for radiation safety training).
- Ability to work overtime and occasional weekends.
Qualifications
- Previous lab experience or NDT exposure.
- Experience working with acceptance codes, compliance procedures, or regulated environments.
- Mechanical aptitude or field inspection experience.
