Position: Laboratory Technician (CRC)

Location: JCCT (CRC) Campus

Department: Central Lab

Purpose:

The purpose of the Laboratory Technician is to handle the day-to-day task associated with Laboratory Study Kit Management, as well as preparation and shipping of specimens. The Lab Technician will follow all laboratory guidelines and procedures while maintaining accurate data reporting practices to ensure consistent and diligent execution of specimen processing.

Position Summary:

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for supporting clinical research operations through accurate specimen collection, processing, and shipping, as well as managing study kits and laboratory inventory. This role ensures compliance with all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) while maintaining data integrity and safety standards. The technician collaborates closely with study coordinators and leadership to facilitate smooth workflow, performs phlebotomy and vital sign collection, and assists with study-related procedures. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in laboratory equipment and documentation are essential for success in this position. This position will report directly to the Site Director.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

  • Reads, understands, and follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), including safety and quality procedures
  • Works and communicates effectively with the Study Coordinators, Site Director, and QA Manager to ensure the accuracy and workflow of the department
  • Complete required training, including Good Clinical Practice (GCP), handling/transportation of dangerous goods, study specific protocol training, etc. and utilizing Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
  • Ensuring that sponsor-provided equipment and supplies are labeled appropriately with the sponsor’s name and protocol number before being placed in the laboratory/clinic space
  • Managing laboratory activities such as lab kit ordering and inventory, management, and disposing of expired supplies on an ongoing basis
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area while keeping specific areas sanitized
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and calibration when needed, including Temp Tale replacement annually
  • Recording min/max temperature for specimen and investigational product (IP) storage daily
  • Preparation of lab kits prior to the day of study visit
  • Collect blood samples from study subjects according to the study protocol and lab manual
  • Examines specimens for adequacy and appropriateness
  • Verifies specimen documentation, including requisition, is complete and accurate
  • Processes and ships specimens to the reference laboratory according to the most recent study lab manual
  • Disposes of specimens as directed by study sponsor
  • Returns loaned equipment back to the sponsor as directed
  • Obtaining vital signs and EKGs from study subjects and assisting research staff with other study procedures as needed
  • Assists research staff with query resolution regarding specimen documentation and collection
  • Maintain confidentiality and secure storage of all study related documents
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, Associate Degree
  • Laboratory and/or Phlebotomy training or certification
  • At least 3 years of similar experience as a Laboratory Technician or Phlebotomist in a Clinical Research or healthcare setting with the ability to perform complex draws

Skills and Competencies:

  • Self-motivated, highly organized and detail oriented
  • Proficient in operating and managing laboratory equipment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong written skills
  • Ability to work under direction as well as independently
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Teams
  • Medical Terminology ()

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and use hands along with fingers, to handle or feel.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
