Role Summary
The Junior Mechanical Engineer provides essential design and execution support across Allocortechs aerospace product lines. You will be responsible for transforming conceptual designs into high-quality SolidWorks models and detailed 2D drawings, designing assembly and test fixtures, and supporting environmental testing (vibration, thermal, and shock). This is a high-growth role where you will learn to apply rigorous aerospace standards (DO-160 and GD&T) to real-world flight hardware.
Core Responsibilities
- CAD Design & Documentation: Create and maintain 3D models and detailed 2D production drawings for mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks and PDM.
- Drawing Standards: Apply fundamental GD&T principles to ensure parts are manufacturable and meet assembly requirements.
- Tooling & Fixtures: Design and prototype assembly jigs, kitting trays, and test fixtures to support the production and quality teams.
- Testing Support: Assist in the execution of environmental and mechanical validation tests, including setup, data collection, and post-test inspection.
- Configuration Management: Manage parts, assemblies, and BOMs within SolidWorks PDM, ensuring strict adherence to revision control and AS9100 documentation standards.
- Prototyping: Interface with the machine shop and 3D printing resources to quickly iterate on mechanical concepts and proof-of-performance models.
- Technical Writing: Author clear test reports, assembly instructions, and technical summaries to document design intent and verification results.
Required Qualifications
- Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or a related technical field.
- CAD Proficiency: 13 years of experience (including internships/co-ops) using SolidWorks for 3D modeling and 2D drawing creation.
- Technical Fundamentals: Strong understanding of static mechanics, material properties, and basic thermal principles.
- Hands-on Skill: Experience using basic shop tools (drills, saws, calipers) and a 3D printer to build or modify prototypes.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to follow strict drawing templates and documentation processes without cutting corners.
Qualifications
- Certification: CSWA or CSWP (SolidWorks) certification.
- Manufacturing Exposure: Familiarity with CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, or injection molding constraints.
- Standards Knowledge: Exposure to ASME Y14.5 (GD&T) or aerospace standards like DO-160.
- Simulation: Basic experience running linear static FEA to sanity-check part designs.
- AI Tooling: Comfort using LLMs (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT) to summarize technical standards or draft documentation.
