Job Summary:

The Instrumentation Engineer will join the instrument development group and work on the full lifecycle of low noise, high resolution digitizers, sensors and earthquake monitoring systems. From concept and design to supporting the needs of our critical seismic monitoring community, you will have a leading role in your part of the instrument.

Successful candidates will be based in our Pasadena, California headquarters and work closely with a small team of design and test engineers and with the support of mechanical and production engineers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and test the electronic components and subcircuits of the instruments.
  • Test and improve low noise analog feedback systems.
  • Conduct studies to reduce the sensitivity and associated noise of electronics due to temperature and external perturbations (EMI, RFI…).
  • Perform tests as appropriate on complete systems.
  • Interface with digital and software groups for the design of the required embedded digital system for the sensors.
  • Provide direction on layout of printed circuit boards to meet design goals.
  • Design required equipment for production test and interface with software group to program test equipment.
  • Participate in the research and development of new families of instruments.

Educations and/or Experiences:

  • B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering. A BSEE or Master’s Degree would be preferred.
  • 1-5 years’ experience in Analog Electronics design and test.
  • Experience with designing analog building blocks such as receivers, de-modulators, and feedback systems.
  • Experience with digital electronics.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Must be willing to learn the unique needs of precision scientific instruments for both Earth and planetary applications.
  • Must be able to design analog electronics and model its behavior and performance to optimize stability, power consumption and noise.
  • Experience with Altium/Capture and PSpice will be valuable.
  • Oversee construction of prototypes, make changes to the prototypes, implement them within the overall development and develop tools and experimental methods to test and troubleshoot them.
  • Must have a good understanding of digital electronics to be able to interface with the digital and software group.
  • Ability to transition the design to production.
  • Strong organization and planning skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write reports and correspondence.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to handle multiple tasks.

The annual base salary for this position is between $95,000 - $105,000 (commensurate with experience).
