Instrumentation & Automation Technician (Pharma Utilities)
Location: North Chicago, IL - On-site
Type: 6+ month contract with strong potential for extension
Shift: M–F, 8:00am–5:00pm


Automated Systems, Inc. is seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Automation Technician to support the reliable operation of a major pharmaceutical utilities plant, including steam , nitrogen, water systems, HVAC, and waste treatment processes. This role ensures that critical utilities remain safe, compliant, and continuously available to support manufacturing operations. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong hands-on I&C/automation experience who enjoys troubleshooting, optimization, and maintaining high-reliability systems in a GMP-regulated environment.



Key Responsibilities

• Perform calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and functional testing of instrumentation and control devices across utilities and waste treatment systems.
• Maintain and service transmitters, sensors, analyzers, control valves, actuators, and related equipment.
• Diagnose issues in pneumatic, electronic, and digital/PLC-based control systems and implement corrective actions.
• Conduct preventive and predictive maintenance to ensure equipment reliability and regulatory compliance.
• Support system upgrades, commissioning activities, and automation improvements across utilities operations.
• Maintain accurate GMP documentation: calibration records, PM reports, work orders, and change control updates.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Maintenance, and Operations to ensure safe, reliable delivery of plant utilities.
• Update and maintain P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and control schematics as needed.
• Adhere to all plant safety programs including LOTO, confined space, and PPE requirements.



Required Qualifications

• Associate degree, technical diploma, or military training in Instrumentation, Automation, Electronics, or similar field.
• 3+ years of experience working with instrumentation and controls in industrial, utilities, manufacturing, or energy environments.
• Strong hands-on experience calibrating flow, pressure, temperature, level, analytical, and environmental monitoring instrumentation.
• Ability to read/interpret P&IDs, loop sheets, wiring diagrams, and automation schematics.
• Experience troubleshooting PLC/DCS control systems (Allen-Bradley, DeltaV, etc.).
• Prior experience working in pharmaceutical, chemical, biotech, or other regulated industries .



Physical Requirements

• Ability to work in industrial utility environments (steam plant, water treatment, HVAC areas).
• Must be able to climb ladders, work at heights, and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Must be comfortable wearing appropriate PPE.
