Job DescriptionJob DescriptionStep into a day on the electrical reliability team

On a rotating 12-hour schedule, you arrive ready to keep one of the world’s largest steel producers running. You review overnight logs, trace a recurring PLC fault with a schematic in hand, swap a burned-out motor on a critical conveyor, and upgrade an aging panel to stabilize operations. By mid-shift, you’re assisting production with an operational adjustment; by shift end, you’ve completed preventive tasks across multiple plant areas—sometimes hot, cold, wet, greasy, or noisy—so the line never stops.

What you’ll do

  • Independently diagnose and troubleshoot a wide range of electrical and electronic systems using schematics, AC/DC fundamentals, and PLCs.
  • Install, maintain, repair, and operate electrical equipment across a heavy industrial environment to sustain continuous operations.
  • Upgrade outdated electrical panels and install new panels to modernize reliability.
  • Support operations as needed to ensure steady production.
  • Work solo with minimal supervision or collaborate with other maintenance technicians.
  • Use standard and specialized tools, including mobile equipment, pendant and overhead cranes, and forklifts.

Schedule & environment

  • Rotating 12-hour shifts that include Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
  • Overtime as required to meet operational demands.
  • Varied plant conditions: hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy.
  • Safety is a core value: hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, and metatarsal boots are required at all times.

What you bring

  • Understanding of PLC fundamentals and 480V motor control.
  • Hands-on ability to troubleshoot equipment and replace failed motors.
  • Minimum 1 year of manufacturing/industrial experience (including relevant military experience) or equivalent education in areas such as industrial electronics, motors and controls, schematics and electrical power, print reading, computers and PLCs, electronics, AC/DC theory, power, test instruments/instrumentation, electrical maintenance, or commercial construction/installation.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Punctuality, consistent attendance, and self-direction.
  • Ability to pass required assessment test(s).
  • Journeyman or Master Electrician license.
  • 2+ years of diagnostic and troubleshooting experience.

Proficiencies

  • PLC troubleshooting
  • Electrical diagnostics and repair
  • Electrical/electronic systems

Tools & tech you’ll touch

  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)

Compensation & benefits

  • Base pay is either $26.75 or $34.03 depending on job knowledge test score. If your initial test places you at $26.75, there are advancement opportunities to reach $34.03.
  • Quarterly Incentive Bonus Plan.
  • U. S. Steel offers a very competitive benefit package: Health, Dental, Life Insurance, 401K, Paid Vacation, 10 Paid Holidays, and Daily Overtime Pay.
