High-Performance Building Energy Engineer

We are working with an energy engineering and consulting firm that helps commercial and public sector customers in California develop energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.

This is a senior-level role ideal for an experienced energy systems engineer with a strong background in deep energy retrofits and a strong background in HVAC and central plant systems. You’ll lead complex retrofit investigations, develop investment-grade energy plans, and collaborate closely with clients to implement customized energy improvement strategies.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead deep energy retrofit assessments of large commercial and institutional buildings
  • Identify and quantify Energy Improvement Measures (EIMs) through field audits
  • Develop Investment-Grade Energy Plans with savings forecasts, capex, and ROI analysis
  • Align recommendations with client financial goals and operational realities
  • Support energy modeling to evaluate retrofit options and project impacts
  • Apply advanced HVAC control strategies (e.g., ASHRAE Guideline 36) to existing systems
  • Evaluate electrification opportunities, including waste heat integration
  • Interface with contractors, commissioning agents, and design teams during implementation
  • Participate in IPMVP Option C-based measurement and verification studies
  • Provide technical oversight and mentorship for junior engineers
  • Contribute to client development and proposal writing for new opportunities

The ideal candidate will have:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (U.S., Canadian, or European institution )
  • 8+ years of experience in commercial/institutional energy systems design, retrofits, or commissioning
  • Strong design experience with HVAC systems, central plants, and terminal unit controls
  • Fluency in spreadsheet-based and software-assisted energy modeling
  • Proficiency in engineering economic analysis and feasibility evaluation
  • Familiarity with commissioning and retro-commissioning practices
  • Exposure to IPMVP and post-construction performance verification
  • Strong visual communication and client presentation skills
  • PE license but not required
  • Knowledge of solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS)
  • Familiarity with California energy codes and utility rate structures
  • Experience with performance-based incentive programs
  • CEM or similar professional certifications

Salary Range: 120,000 - 140,000
