Job Description
Head of Marine Safety and Assurance (Designated Person)
Location: London
Rate: £527.10 per day (via umbrella)
Contract Type: Contract – Full Time
Duration: 6 months (Rolling)
Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced Head of Marine Safety and Assurance to lead marine safety, compliance, and assurance activities across passenger ferry operations and associated terminals. This role carries Designated Person (DP) responsibilities under the ISM Code and is pivotal in ensuring the highest standards of safety, health, environment, and quality across marine services. Extensive experience in ferry operations is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as Designated Person under the ISM Code, ensuring full compliance with marine safety regulations.
- Lead health, safety, and pollution prevention initiatives across vessels and terminals.
- Oversee the implementation and auditing of the Safety Management System (SMS).
- Manage emergency exercises, including counter-pollution drills and regulatory inspections.
- Liaise with external bodies including MCA, Port Authorities, emergency services, and local councils.
- Train staff in safety, auditing, and counter-pollution procedures.
- Maintain and develop HSEQ documentation, emergency plans, and performance indicators.
- Support marine operations and engineering teams in maintaining safe and uninterrupted services.
Requirements:
- Qualified to STCW Master II/2 or Degree in Nautical Sciences with minimum STCW II/1.
- Extensive experience in marine safety management, particularly in passenger ferry operations (essential).
- Strong working knowledge of ISM Code, MCA regulations, ISO standards, and UK HSE legislation.
- Proven track record in leading HSEQ functions, internal audits, and safety improvement programmes.
- IOSH/NEBOSH certification and membership of a relevant maritime professional body.
- Excellent leadership, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills.
