Job Description
Position: Head of Engineering \n Location: Gateshead, Tyne and Wear \n Salary: £55K + \n Hours: Monday – Friday 38 Hours Per Week \n Contract: Permanent\n \n My client, a well-established independent commercial vehicle workshop, is on the lookout for an experienced and organised Workshop Manager to lead their Gateshead-based team.\n \n This is leadership role focused on driving quality, productivity, and efficiency across multiple Depots in the North East.\n \n What you’ll be doing in your new Head of Engineering role:\nDefine and lead the engineering strategy across multiple sites, ensuring consistency, effectiveness, and future readiness.\n\nHold overall responsibility for engineering standards, governance, and assurance, with a strong focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and asset reliability.\n\nDevelop and strengthen leadership capability by coaching Engineering Managers and supporting high-performing technical teams.\n\nChampion a proactive safety mindset and drive continuous improvement throughout all engineering operations.\n\nPartner closely with operational, commercial, and central support teams to ensure engineering priorities are aligned with wider organisational goals.\n\nThe successful Head of Engineering will have:\nAn experienced senior engineering leader with a strong track record in a complex operational environment.\n\nIn-depth knowledge of fleet, asset, or vehicle maintenance operations.\n\nA credible and confident people leader, able to inspire, challenge, and develop both managers and frontline teams.\n\nCommercially minded, with experience driving efficiency, cost control, and performance improvement.\n\nDeeply committed to safe working practices, regulatory compliance, and high-quality outcomes.\n\nA clear and persuasive communicator, comfortable engaging with stakeholders at all levels, including senior leadership.\n\nRelevant engineering qualification (HNC/HND or equivalent) desirable; formal leadership or management training is an advantage.\n\nFull UK driving licence required.\n\nBenefits you can expect in your new Head Of Engineering role:\n£55K+ Basic Salay\nBonus Schemes to be discussed at interview \nMonday to Friday daytime hours\nCompany pension and healthcare plan\nLife assurance and sick pay\nOngoing training and long-service rewards\nSupportive environment within a close-knit local businessNot sure you meet every requirement?
