JOB TITLE:

GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT MECHANIC-AFLOAT

JOB PURPOSE:

The Ground Support Equipment Mechanic diagnoses malfunctions and repairs Ground Support Equipment (GSE), advises and trains lower grade workers on diagnosis and repair of less complex repair/maintenance problems, inspects and approves completed maintenance actions, solves repair problems by studying drawings, and wiring diagrams and schematics, and technical publications; uses automated maintenance data systems to monitor maintenance trends, analyze equipment requirements, maintain equipment records, and document maintenance actions, and analyzes diagnosis, and repairs GSE using conventional and digital multi-meters, voltmeters, ohmmeters, frequency counters, oscilloscopes, circuit card testers, transistor testers, and hand tools.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and supervise the work of contractor mechanics.
  • Provide training, guidance, knowledge, and technical support to uniformed and government civilian personnel in the operation and maintenance repair of MHE and SMSE.
  • Act as the technical lead and subject matter expert (SME) to active-duty sailors working onboard our carrier and Weapons departments charged with maintaining and repairing all assigned shipboard MHE and SMSE equipment.
  • Act as CNAL's MHE Program shipboard technical liaison for all MHE and SMSE equipment.
  • Perform overhaul work in accordance with MHE Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) Processing Guide.
  • Ensure all equipment is certified to meet ship operational schedules and deployments. Verify that the Quality Assurance/Quality Control Manager signs all final weight test certifications.
  • Performs all EE battery testing and analyzing operations in accordance with NAVUP P-538.
  • Ensure all shipboard EE forklift batteries for repair/overhaul are tested at a minimum of every three years or during any major availability of 6 months or more.
  • Train shipboard in properly caring for and maintaining shipboard lead acid (flooded) or maintenance-free (gel cell) batteries.
  • Test and evaluate MHE/SMSE for usage and verify all services are performed utilizing the correct manufacturer technical references the Government).
  • Trace and locate defects that cause hydraulic and other major systems to fail or not perform up to specifications regarding power o, capacity, speed, and pressure.
  • Analyze malfunctions and determine the extent of repairs necessary by visual and auditory examinations.
  • Use a wide variety of test equipment, i.e., engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers; vacuum and fuel pump testers, injector ignition timers, tachometers, voltmeters and gauges, micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators to make repairs and modifications according to specifications and procedures given in applicable Navy, NAVSEA and Government approved civilian commercial off the shelf (COTS publications and or directives.
  • Monitor the workload and provide training and technical assistance for operating, servicing, and repairing all MHE and SMSE.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be physically able to be on their feet for several hours daily.
  • must lift 50 pounds to operate hand dollies and pallet jacks to move parts and materials, as required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance


EDUCATION:

  • Graduate of vocational/technical school in a related field or NEC 7618 (Afloat Support Equipment Technician) or equivalent
    • Three (3) years of direct or related mechanical experience may be substituted for vocational/technical school and/or NEC.


EXPERIENCE(REQUIRED):

  • 5 years of experience as a senior shipboard MHE/SMSE diesel equipment mechanic foreman or supervisor.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • must possess a valid state driver's license and be qualified to operate all equipment maintained.
  • Master Certification in Automotive and Truck repair or the equivalent of 10 years of experience as a Heavy Equipment Mobile Mechanic.
