Murphy Water is the Water & Wastewater Process Engineering Division which deliveries municipal water treatment solutions for Water Authorities in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The Role

Reporting to the Projects Manager the successful candidate will work on Murphy Water and Wastewater Projects based throughout Northern Ireland and the UK.

The position of either a Mechanical / Electrical / Chemical Engineer would suit a motivated, practical and adaptable individual who has the ambition to gain Chartered Engineer status and wishes to work in a progressive and innovative contracting environment. Working under the direct supervision of a Chartered Engineer, and in conjunction with other divisions the post holder will support the delivery of a range of water projects across Republic and Northern Ireland and the UK.

A candidate must be:

Role Specific Duties

Mechanical Engineer

The role of a Mechanical Engineer within Murphy will require individual participation and understanding of the following activities:

  • Managing and maintaining water and sewerage infrastructure operations
  • Presenting project details and technical information to colleagues and clients
  • Writing reports, e.g., Method Statements and Risk Assessments, purchase order specifications
  • Managing project budgets
  • Keeping up to date with changes in regulatory legislation and guidelines
  • Managing contracts and working within budgetary constraints
  • Liaising with clients, contractors, government agencies, local authorities and suppliers
  • Supervising staff and site workers
  • Using a variety of specialist computer applications/simulation software
  • Ensuring that projects keep to budgets and timescales
  • Maintaining an awareness of current environmental issues
  • Design work will include producing specifications for, designing, developing, manufacturing and installing new or modified mechanical components or systems

They should have a good understanding of the mechanical design process and ability to demonstrate working knowledge of brief/scope documents, design concepts as well as some experience technically i.e. calculations.

Mechanical engineers to be technically minded, able to demonstrate numerical and scientific ability and have problem-solving skills. A candidate should have a good understanding of:

  • Access platforms, bridges, handrailing and flooring
  • Pumping systems, pipework, valves and supports
  • Installation techniques using portable lifting appliances, overhead gantry cranes and similar
  • Support structures relating to surge thrust, equipment operating and design pressure

Electrical Engineer

The role of an Electrical Engineer within Murphy will require individual participation and understanding of the following activities:

  • Prepare specifications and scope of work for electrical equipment such as water treatment pumps and blowers, power generators, MCC’s, transformers, instrumentation, data systems etc.
  • Prepare electrical power and control cables interconnection block diagrams
  • Carry out design calculations for cable-sizing, short circuit calculations, lighting calculations, power balance studying etc.
  • Review of electrical layout drawings and instrumentation arrangements
  • Prepares sketches and performs engineering calculations
  • Preparation of instrument schematics, loop drawings and layout drawings
  • Selection, specification and design of process instrumentation and safety instrumented systems
  • Any design work will include design and planning of fusing and circuitry for electrical power, instrumentation and building services using Amtech or other software package, liaison with process plant suppliers and our subcontractor partners across a range of water projects

Electrical Engineers should have a good understanding of:

  • Power transmission, low voltage distribution systems and electrical wiring installations
  • PLC’s and HMI’s
  • SCADA/Telemetry Systems
  • PLC Architecture
  • Industrial Instrumentation

Chemical Engineer

The role of a Chemical Engineer within Murphy will require individual participation and understanding of the following activities:

  • Hydraulic system design, flow through pipelines, channels, weirs
  • Pumping System calculation development
  • Chemical dosing system design and optimisation
  • Wastewater treatment systems, screening, settlement, secondary processes
  • Sludge treatment systems, dewatering, centrifuges, sludge plate presses and belt presses
  • Awareness and application of Statutory legislation within design processes
  • Awareness of Water Industry Standards within design processes
  • Procurement of plant, materials and specialist subcontractors
  • Liaise with Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Design Teams, considering innovative and cost-effective construction and installation techniques
  • Producing specifications for, designing, developing, manufacturing and installing new or modified process design components or systems
  • Chemical Engineers should to be technically minded, able to demonstrate numerical and scientific ability and have problem-solving skills

Skills / Expertise

  • To have an understanding of NEC contract conditions and a level of commercial awareness
  • Proficiency in PC skills and a working knowledge of AutoCAD/Revit would be a distinct advantage
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and communication skills
  • Strong collaborative skills with an ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • The ability to work under pressure
  • Creativity
  • Have a willingness to learn and be challenged in the Water and Wastewater Industry
  • A good understanding of current BIM design practices and ensuring the effective transfer of information between Designers

Qualifications

  • To have achieved or working towards relevant Engineering degree or equivalent a pre-requisite


Working Conditions

Mainly office based with periodical visits to water and wastewater treatment sites, client visits throughout Northern Ireland, occasional visits to suppliers/sub-contractors.
