Full/Part Time Adjunct: Environmental Scientist / Ecologist (Master in Environmental Studies Program)
Job Summary
The Evergreen State College seeks a full-time or multiple part-time adjunct faculty members for the fall, winter, and spring quarters of the 2025-26 academic year.
Evergreen's Graduate Program on the Environment seeks one or more adjunct faculty colleagues to help students understand the natural science dimensions of environmental issues. We anticipate that successful candidates will come from disciplines such as ecology, environmental science, plant science, and conservation biology. The ability to teach natural science methodologies and content to students with diverse backgrounds in both the natural and social sciences is more important than the specific area of expertise. The ideal candidate will have the ability to help students develop skills and expertise to understand the scientific context of environmental problems. Expertise with tribal community responses to environmental issues would be especially helpful. Evergreen organizes its curriculum through interdisciplinary programs, with faculty teams collaborating across disciplines to design and teach an integrated graduate-level curriculum. The ideal candidate has the ability and passion to integrate the social and natural sciences through study and applications of real-world issues within this curriculum.
A successful candidate must be able to: 1) teach foundational material and advanced topics within the environmental and natural sciences, which might include areas such as conservation biology, ecosystem ecology, environmental science, and natural resources management; 2) teach in interdisciplinary teams with other natural and social scientists; 3) help students develop research skills in environmental and natural sciences; 4) help students develop analytical and methodological tools employed in the environmental and natural sciences, which might include research design, statistical analysis, quantitative methods, and/or Geographical Information Systems; and 5) support students in developing their academic writing skills.
The position is an adjunct faculty member dedicated to graduate students in the
MES
program, with classroom. The position will contribute to the Core
MES
curriculum (and potentially elective courses in the candidates areas of expertise) along with other
MES
faculty as part of teaching teams. Possible courses include:
1) Fall quarter: "Case Studies and Thesis Design," or "Conceptualizing our Regional Environment,"
2) Winter quarter: "Ecological and Social Sustainability," and
3) Spring quarter: "Research Design and Quantitative Methods."
Job Expectations
Evergreen uses narrative evaluations in lieu of grades, and full-time faculty are generally responsible for evaluating 15 students per quarter in
MES
courses. Faculty are also responsible for advising students in their respective area(s) of expertise regarding skill development, career opportunities, and thesis research projects.
MES
faculty are expected to participate in College and
MES
program governance.

We teach our students to develop quantitative and technical skills, think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, value and equity, and work collaboratively to address environmental challenges.
This is an adjunct faculty position and not eligible for continuing appointment. All requirements for the position must be completed at the time of hire. Salary for all positions is based on experience and degrees (see

for more information). We do not offer relocation expenses for our adjunct faculty positions..

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field;
Undergraduate or graduate teaching experience in the ecological and/or environmental sciences;
Ability to teach research design and quantitative research methods;
Ability to teach graduate-level writing skills;
Qualifications
Graduate training in interdisciplinary research;
Experience or demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary team-teaching;
Research or teaching experience in relevant areas of expertise

Salary Information
Range: 15410-31834 per quarter at 1.0 FTE; $7705-$15917 per quarter at 0.5 FTE. Faculty membership is unranked with salary determined on a non-competitive, open scale based on earned degrees and years of relevant experience.
