Number of Positions Available:8 Field Technicians
Job Summary:We are seeking 8 dependable, physically capable individuals to support the installation and retrieval of seismic instrumentation on the Newberry Volcano in Oregon. Work is entirely outdoors in remote, rugged forest terrain at high elevation. Duties will involve frequent walking through pine forest, climbing over downed trees, carrying equipment, and working with GPS-guided tools and instruments.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Transport and install seismic receivers, including GPS units, computers, batteries, and geophones.
  • Use handheld station locator devices for navigation and receiver placement.
  • Operate a slide hammer to install receivers securely into the ground.
  • Register each installed unit at the designated GPS pole location.
  • Retrieve equipment using GPS guide poles and mobile maps; carry up to 10 stations at a time in sacks.
  • Navigate rugged terrain with extensive walking, stepping, and climbing over forest obstacles
  • Follow all safety procedures and team instructions
  • Document work progress as required

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to hike and work outdoors for extended hours in high-altitude conditions (7000–8000 ft)
  • Must be able to lift knees frequently to step over downed trees
  • Capable of carrying up to 30–40 lbs of equipment over uneven ground
  • Tolerance for inclement weather, insects, and variable temperatures

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in field work, outdoor labor, or environmental studies
  • Familiarity with GPS tools and mobile mapping apps a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to work well in a team and communicate effectively

Important Notes:

  • This is a physically demanding outdoor job in remote forested volcanic terrain
  • Punctuality, reliability, and safety awareness are essential
  • Workers must bring appropriate outdoor clothing, boots, and be prepared for rugged field conditions
