Field Technician II

Field Technician

Job Overview We are seeking a skilled Field Technician to service, maintain, and repair low voltage public transportation equipment for NJ Transit rail stations. This position involves working at rail stations throughout Central New Jersey, focusing on critical fare collection systems including Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs), fare gates, and Ticket Office Machines (TOMs).

Key Responsibilities

  • Equipment Maintenance: Service and maintain low voltage fare collection equipment including Ticket Vending Machines, fare gates, Ticket Office Machines, and related systems at NJT rail stations
  • Field Service: Perform on-site troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs at train stations and transit facilities throughout New Jersey
  • System Installation: Install, configure, and upgrade fare collection hardware and software systems for station-based equipment
  • Preventive Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance schedules and system health checks to ensure optimal equipment performance
  • Technical Support: Provide technical assistance and basic training to station personnel and NJT staff
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed service records, repair logs, and maintenance activities for all equipment serviced
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and procedures when working in active rail station environments

Qualifications

Required:

  • Associate's degree in Electronics, Electrical Technology, or related technical field
  • 2+ years of field service experience with low voltage systems or electronic equipment
  • Strong knowledge of electronic circuits, diagnostic tools, and repair techniques
  • Familiarity with public transportation systems and fare collection technology not required
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Schedule flexibility is essential: Must be willing and able to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed for emergency repairs and system maintenance

:

  • Experience with transit systems or public transportation equipment is a plus
  • Knowledge of point-of-sale systems, card readers, or payment processing equipment
  • Understanding of industry regulations and safety standards
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
  • Customer service experience

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs of equipment and tools
  • Comfortable working in active rail station environments (indoor/outdoor conditions)
  • Ability to work around moving trains and in station platform areas
  • Capable of standing, kneeling, and working in various positions for extended periods
  • Manual dexterity for handling small electronic components and tools

Work Details

  • Primary Schedule: 1st shift Monday through Friday
  • Schedule Flexibility Required: Must be available for weekend work, holidays, and emergency calls as needed to maintain critical transit systems
  • Location: Various NJT rail stations throughout Central New Jersey around Trenton down to Lindenwold.
  • Travel: Assigned to multiple stations but may need to assist at other locations during a shift (Company Vehicle)
  • Environment: Active rail stations, platforms, and operational transit environments
