Role Summary
Operate heavy equipment for sitework, concrete operations, and asphalt paving including excavators, skid steers, loaders, rollers, pavers, milling machines, and brooms. Maintain equipment, support production, and follow all safety and quality standards.
General Operating Responsibilities
- Operate excavators (mini/mid-size), skid steers, wheel loaders, telehandlers, rollers, pavers, milling machines, and brooms.
- Perform trenching, excavation, rough and fine grading, backfilling, and demolition.
- Support concrete crews by excavating for footers, walls, flatwork, ADA ramps, and drainage structures.
- Read grade stakes, follow lasers, and set accurate elevations.
- Load/unload materials, trucks, and support hauling operations.
- Tow and maneuver 20’ trailers safely.
- Maintain equipment: grease points, inspect components, track hours, and report mechanical issues.
- Assist labor crews when not operating equipment.
- Follow all safety procedures, blind‐spot awareness, and daily JSA requirements.
- Operate efficiently to meet production targets and minimize rework.
Asphalt-Specific Responsibilities
- Operate asphalt paver: set depth, speed, crown, slope, and maintain consistent mat quality.
- Monitor head of material, auger distribution, and conveyor flow.
- Coordinate with screed operator, roller operators, and truck drivers for smooth paving workflow.
- Operate screed (if assigned): adjust vibration, extensions, leveling arms, and mat thickness.
- Operate rollers: breakdown, intermediate, and finish rolling patterns with proper timing.
- Identify soft spots, segregation, or tender zones and adjust rolling strategy accordingly.
- Operate milling machine or mill head: control depth, slope, speed, and conveyor loading.
- Identify and avoid utilities, structures, and overhead hazards during milling operations.
- Operate broom/sweeper: clean millings, prepare surfaces, maintain broom performance.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license.
- DOT medical card or ability to obtain.
- Ability to pass a drug test.
- 1–2 years of experience operating heavy equipment or asphalt paving machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret site plans, grades, and control lasers.
- Ability to lift 75 lbs.
- Strong mechanical aptitude; able to recognize mechanical issues early.
- Able to work mornings, evenings, and some weekends during peak season.
- Trailer towing: CDL but not required.
- Strong communication, positive attitude, willingness to learn.
Experience & Skill Tiers
- 0–1 yrs: Entry-level; learning controls and supporting tasks.
- 1–3 yrs: Competent operator for skid steer, roller, broom, or mini excavator.
- 3–5 yrs: Independent operator for trenching, grading, milling support, and basic paving operations.
- 5+ yrs: Advanced operator for paver, milling machine, tight grading, complex excavation, and mentoring junior operators.
Compensation & Benefits
- $24–$62/hr DOE.
