Environmental, Health, & Safety Coordinator - Tuffy's Pet Foods
*Onsite in Perham, MN*
Compensation:
- Year one total earnings range from $57,500 to $83,000
- Base Pay: $55,000 to $65,000
- Sign on Bonus (paid out quarterly): $2,500 to $18,000
- Profit Sharing Eligibility: Begins after completing 1 year of employment ($7.5 Million in Profits Paid to Profit Sharing Pool in 2024)

The Opportunity
The Environmental, Health, and Safety Coordinator is responsible for assisting in developing, implementing, and managing health and safety policies and procedures in the workplace, which includes administrative needs for recordkeeping, audits, permits and worker’s comp; and to create an overall safety culture that aligns with KLN objectives & values. The EHS Coordinator will report to site directors of production support or continuous improvement. Dotted line reporting to corporate director of environmental health and safety.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with review of accidents and incidents, conduct investigations to determine root cause, prepare and present findings from incidents, assist with reporting and tracking the corrective actions.
- Collect and track safety data for the business. Disseminate the data where necessary.
- Contribute and coordinate with the training department on safety training plans.
- Coordinate, assist, or present training programs, when necessary, on general safety and facility training and/or specialty area.
- Coordinate the facility response plans; develop a team of incident responders for fire evacuation, medical, disaster recovery, and spills on all shifts. Assist the Safety Director with coordinating the necessary training for each function. Assist with the appropriate drills for each possible threat scenario as identified in the Emergency Action Plan. Work with the local authorities on at least an annual basis to participate in at least one drill or one walk through of the entire facilities. Coordinate with the Incident Response Teams on the equipment needed for them to perform their duties and ensure a system is in place to inspect and replenish as needed.
- Support development and updating of all necessary facility maps showing the exit routes and location of all emergency equipment for existing facilities, and any future expansions.
- Ensure that the list of emergency contacts is updated and displayed in required areas.
- Assist with the contractor safety program and ensuring that all contractors working onsite receive location specific training prior to starting work.
- Coordinate with Management on facility deficiencies and monthly safety inspections.
- Ensure inspections by regulatory agencies are coordinated and deficiencies minimized and corrected.
- Maintain all logs and documentation associated with safety-related permits and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain and update SOPs, as needed, for all safe work practices and equipment and utilize them in the day-to-day training.
- Participate in institutional professional development and training.
- Participate in the development of safety guidelines, related environmental health and safety communications, and educational information.
- Practice safe working techniques and reinforce the safety policies, guidelines, and procedures as set out by KLN Family Brands and the individual company.
- Provide advice and assistance to management to ensure that effective EHS is implemented and working.
- Provide daily guidance and direction in EHS programs at the employee / supervisor level to ensure a common and effective approach.
- Responsible for coordinating safety related regulatory programs and their applications. Gather necessary information and help support the compliance process.
- Organize, schedule & facilitate safety committees.
- Perform and document Job Safety Hazard Analysis.
- Support Subject Matter Expert Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) assessments for the facilities.
- Support facility growth and expansion to ensure all appropriate programs have been properly reviewed and implemented.
- Involved in safe design of equipment, layout and other capital changes.
- Assist with recycling/waste minimization activities.
- Assist with regulatory issues, track corrective actions, and ensure they are being completed.
- Help to identify safety equipment and locate possible vendors.
- Keep the Corporate Safety Director informed of all projects and work with EHS Coordinators at other locations to ensure a consistent approach to is being taken across all KLN companies when necessary.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- 2 or more years’ experience in a manufacturing environment
- Willingness to be the lead on environmental and safety compliance
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize workload
- Working knowledge and experience with safety a plus
- Basic math/statistical skills
- Willingness to develop a working knowledge of Federal/State Regulatory Requirements (OSHA, DOT, EPA)
- Willingness to develop a working knowledge of chemical safety and hygiene
- Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Office suite
- Excellent verbal, written communication and decision-making skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal communication

- Bilingual in Spanish/English a plus
