Environmental Data Scientist

The Han lab at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is seeking an environmental data scientist to support a variety of new and ongoing projects related to predictive analytics and modeling in disease ecology. The successful candidate will be an excellent team player with versatile computational skills and demonstrated excellence in the effective communication of ecological concepts and research findings through both written and visual media. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with formal science communication training. Though previous experience in the field of disease ecology is not required, candidates should possess a deep interest in investigating and understanding complex systems through rigorous and creative analysis of data that combines socio-environmental systems, ecosystems (both terrestrial and aquatic), climate change, social science, policy, and decision-science. Thus, strong data science skills and expertise with GitHub and the R programming language are required. Experience with plotting and mapping libraries (e.g., plotly, D3, leaflet) or building web applications (e.g., with Shiny, Earth Engine Apps) is a plus. Previous experience with machine learning and distributed or cloud computing is preferred, and candidates with previous experience with (or strong interest in learning) machine learning or deep learning approaches to analyzing sequence data, remote sensing data, and image data are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants for this position should be prepared to demonstrate their written and visual communication skills, for instance, by submitting academic research manuscripts, blog entries written for a lay audience, and examples of previous data visualizations. There is a strong preference for this position to be based in-person at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY.
