Job Description

About the Role

La Nube is looking for a diligent, responsible, experienced, and certified Environmental and Laboratory Safety Specialist. This position is responsible for the testing and inspection of workplace environments and equipment, plus working to develop safety programs. This position is responsible for reporting and forecasting risk, maintaining proper storage, and maintenance of hazardous materials that may be required for the STEAM Center’s operation. This position may also assist in the maintenance and sanitation of the facility.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, public health, safety, risk management or related science field .
  • Associate’s degree in a related field required.
  • Two (2) years' experience in environmental health and/or safety in an institutional, organizational, or laboratory setting.
  • Two (2) years of scientific research experience .
  • Valid OSHA Certification or NEBOSH Certification , must obtain within eighteen (18) months of appointment to position.
  • Experience with ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001 standards.
  • Experience with CDC, USDA, NIH, EPA. TCEQ. NFPA, and other government regulations.
  • One (1) year experience in a supervisory or team leadership capacity .
  • One (1) year experience in waste management practices or one (1) or more of the following certifications:
  • Associate Safety Professional
  • Certified Safety Professional
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist
  • Ability to work irregular hours as necessary including off hours, holidays, weekends, and evenings/early mornings.
  • Prior experience in an EHS position is a plus.
  • Proficient knowledge of basic budgeting practices in relation to managing department fund allocations.
  • Experience investigating incidents and performing root cause analysis.
  • Experience in OSHA reporting standards and requirements.
  • Proficient knowledge of using safety management software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in training teams and co-workers on how to maintain compliance.
  • Basic technical skills.

Essential Functions

  • Commitment to completing tasks the right way – no shortcuts.
  • Conduct safety inspections and audits to identify hazards.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Membership in professional EHS organizations .
  • Respond to hazardous material spills/contaminations.
  • Respond to fire alarm activations and other emergencies.
  • May be required to operate in an On-Call status.
  • Assist facilities and exhibits team as necessary.
  • Develop, update, and maintain emergency response plans and standard operating procedures.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain programs and procedures for the facility in relation to inspection of equipment, handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials, respiratory risk and protection protocol.
  • Conduct indoor air quality evaluation and inspections.
  • Communicate with the cleaning vendors to ensure proper sanitation, storage, and use of materials.
  • Develop training programs for employees to educate and maintain compliance and safety standards.
  • Maintain training documents in collaboration with the Human Resources team.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly and quarterly reports of findings for adequate documentation and reporting standards.
  • Utilize a radio to communicate with employees throughout the STEAM Center.
  • Utilize tools and materials to assist in the maintenance, cleanliness, and improvement of the facility.
  • Conduct risk assessment and evaluate impacts of projects and processes.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Work alongside team members and guests while maintaining harmonious workplace relationships.
  • Verify hours of work.
  • Track consumables and inventory.
  • Order supplies and maintain stock of items to maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and smooth operations.
  • Assist the VP of Facilities and Exhibits in maintaining a high level of operations and performance within the cleaning and custodial team.
  • Track quality of work being performed within the building custodial staff.
  • Provide backup assistance to other team members to ensure continuity of services.
  • Ability to communicate proficiently both verbally and in writing in the English .

Physical Demands/Occupational Hazards

This position is highly active. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

  • Observe and react to the needs of guests, team members, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Frequent movement throughout the STEAM Center.
  • Manipulate, lift and/or move materials weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Frequent bending/stooping, kneeling, reaching, crouching, and overhead reaching.
  • Communicate safety hazards.
  • Frequent use of hands to feel materials or objects.
  • Exposure to solvents, chemicals, and gases.
  • Frequent use of sense of smell to identify safety hazards.
  • Frequent use of sense of sound to identify safety hazards.
  • Frequent work around dirt, dust, loud noises, and odors.
  • Occasional work in outdoor elements (may consist of harsh heat or cold).
  • Occasional walking on uneven surfaces.
  • Occasional exposure to leaning edges and glass barriers.
  • Observe State and Federal OSHA safety standards.
