Position Overview
This is an entry-level metallurgist / metallurgy technician role ideal for someone with technical training, coursework, or hands-on lab experience in materials science or related fields.
No professional work experience is required — we will train you.
You will assist staff with forging process support, heat treat development, testing, documentation, and process control. You will also spend time in both office and manufacturing environments, learning the fundamentals of materials engineering in a forging facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in reviewing customer material specs and basic technical requirements.
- Support metallurgical testing (hardness, tensile test preparation, microstructure sample prep).
- Help with metallography work: cutting, mounting, polishing, etching, and photographing microstructures.
- Participate in data entry, test results documentation, and report creation.
- Learn how forging and heat treatment processes affect material properties.
- Help monitor and maintain records for heat treat cycles, furnace charts, and process documentation.
- Assist with root-cause investigations under supervision (e.g., mechanical test failures, grain structure issues).
- Gather technical data from the forge shop and heat treat areas for process control.
- Support quality and engineering teams during audits and review of procedures.
- Learn industry standards (AMS, MIL, ASTM) and help ensure compliance under supervision.
- Contribute to continuous-improvement
Qualifications & Skills
Required:
- Technical training, coursework, or degree in one of the following:

- Materials Science
- Metallurgy
- Mechanical Engineering Technology
- Welding Technology
- Industrial Technology
- Physics or Chemistry with materials-related coursework
- Or a related technical/engineering field
- Strong interest in metallurgy, heat treatment, and material properties.
- Basic understanding of metals, microstructures, or mechanical properties (classroom level is fine).
- Willingness to learn in both a lab and industrial shop-floor environment.
- Good computer skills (Microsoft Office; ability to learn data systems).
- Attention to detail, good documentation habits, and safety awareness.
(but not required):
- Experience from school labs (metallography, tensile testing, hardness testing, microscopy).
- Familiarity with engineering drawings or material specifications.
- Any exposure to forging, heat treat, machining, or manufacturing environments.
Working Conditions
- Combination of office, lab, and forge shop floor.
- Must be comfortable around industrial equipment, furnaces, and shop environments (PPE provided).
- Standard Monday–Friday schedule.
