Engineering Technician I
Role: We’re looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Engineering Technician I. This is an entry-level role where you’ll perform and assist with testing soils and construction materials in the field, lab, or office. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and technicians and gain hands-on experience in construction material testing.
Requirements:
· High school diploma or GED
· Ability to understand and carry out instructions
· Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
· Must have a valid driver’s license
· Ability to provide excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public
· Willingness to work outdoors in all weather
· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on your feet
· Willingness to work variable shifts, including weekends
· Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
· Knowledge of basic mathematical computations
· No experience is needed - but SHA experience or exposure to materials testing is a plus
Engineering Technician II
As an Engineering Technician II, you’ll help inspect and test construction materials such as asphalt, concrete, and soil in the lab or on active construction sites. This is a mid-level role and a great next step if you have some technical or field experience and want to grow your career in civil engineering or materials testing.
Requirements:
· High school diploma or GED
· One year of relevant experience (construction materials testing, field inspection, or lab work)
· Education in an engineering or science curriculum at an accredited junior college, college, or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours per year for up to three years of the required experience may be substituted
· Specific construction material testing certification(s) may substitute for one year of experience
· Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, and data processing procedures
· Basic knowledge of geometry and basic mathematical calculations used in engineering drawing and drafting
· Knowledge of AASHTO and ASTM test specifications and methods
· Valid driver’s license (required)
· Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
· Basic knowledge of specific construction materials (Asphalt, Concrete, Soils, Metals, Pavement Markings, Aggregates and/or Geotechnical)
· Knowledge of algebra, geometry, and basic mathematical calculations
· Knowledge of basic engineering principles, practices, and methods
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public
· Ability to work outdoors, travel locally, and lift up to 50 lbs
· Ability to prepare material testing and inspection reports
Bonus: Previous SHA fieldwork or familiarity with SHA standards is a strong asset.
Technician III
Role: We are seeking an experienced Technician III to lead field and lab inspections, guide junior staff, and ensure material testing meets SHA specs. Work involves travel, field testing, reporting, and acting as a liaison between the team and higher-level engineers. This is the perfect opportunity if you are experienced and want to take on a leadership role in transportation inspection and material testing.
Requirements:
· High school diploma or GED
· Three years of experience in the areas of construction material testing, drafting, engineer computations, soil or rock drilling, etc
· Education in an engineering or science curriculum at an accredited junior college, college, or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours per year for up to three years of the required experience may be substituted
· Specific construction material testing certification(s) may substitute for one year of experience
· Knowledge of design criteria, construction standards, and inspection methods and techniques
· Knowledge of basic engineering principles, practices, and methods
· Basic knowledge of geometry and basic mathematical calculations used in engineering drawing and drafting
· Knowledge of AASHTO and ASTM test specifications and methods
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public
· Ability to communicate effectively
· Ability to physically perform essential duties
· Ability to provide excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders
· Knowledge of specific construction materials (Asphalt, Concrete, Soils, Metals, Pavement Markings, Aggregates and/or Geotechnical)
· Ability to prepare and review materials testing and inspection reports
· Must be able to lift 50 lbs and work in active construction zones or labs
· Valid driver’s license (required)
Technician IV
Role: The Technician IV is a senior technical role focused on high-level inspections, database support, and training junior technicians. You’ll work independently or with engineers on materials testing, SHA quality assurance, and data tracking across multiple project sites. If you are a seasoned tech with leadership skills, this is your chance to make an impact.
Requirements:
· High school diploma or GED
· Five years of experience in the areas of construction material testing, drafting, engineer computations, soil or rock drilling, etc
· Education in an engineering or science curriculum at an accredited junior college, college, or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours per year for up to three years of the required experience may be substituted
· Specific construction material testing certification(s) may substitute for one year of experience
· Knowledge of basic engineering principles, practices, and methods
· Knowledge of design criteria, construction standards, and inspection methods and techniques
· Knowledge of geometry and basic mathematical calculations used in engineering drawing and drafting
· Knowledge of maps, deeds, plats, and plans and how they are prepared
· Knowledge of AASHTO and ASTM test specifications and methods
· Ability to learn advanced computer skills and data processing procedures
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public
· Ability to communicate effectively
· Ability to physically perform essential duties
· Ability to provide excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders
· Knowledge of specific construction materials applicable to job assignment (Asphalt, Concrete, Soils, Metals, Pavement Markings, Aggregates, and/or Geotechnical)
· Ability to prepare and review materials testing and inspection reports
· Knowledge and expertise in managing databases and writing queries with MS Access, SQL, and Oracle
· Valid Maryland driver’s license (required)
· Able to travel across Maryland and work flexible shifts, including weekends
· Must possess or obtain SHA-recognized certification in assigned technical area within 3 months of start
