Job DescriptionJob Description

Job Overview:

The Senior Fabric Structures Designer/Engineer is responsible for the complete technical lifecycle of tension fabric structures and related textile products—from concept and geometry through patterning, engineering, and production-ready files. This role owns the technical design of large-format fabric structures such as event tents, membrane structures, and custom textile enclosures, serving as the internal subject-matter expert for fabric behavior under tension, penalization, seam engineering, and print integration.

Role Boundaries

Not a graphic design, CAD drafting, or pattern-making-only role. This is a senior product engineering position specializing in fabric and tensile structures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Engineering: Develop tension fabric structures (single/twin/multi-pole, clear-span, framed systems) including geometry, seam , and reinforcement zones.
  • Patterning: Convert 3D surfaces into 2D cutting patterns; create seam maps, reinforcement details, and apply compensation factors for stretch/tension.
  • Print Preparation: Produce print-ready files; map graphics to curved surfaces; ensure registration, bleed, and consistency.
  • Manufacturing Support: Generate CAD outputs; assist with prototyping and production troubleshooting; collaborate with fabrication teams.
  • Product Development: Lead new tent models, expansions, and efficiency improvements.
  • Team Mentorship: Train and support junior designers.

Authority

  • Owns technical design decisions, seam layouts, and reinforcement strategies.
  • Approves production-ready files and prototypes.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 5+ years in tension fabric structures (tents, membranes, sails, inflatables).
  • Expertise in patterning, penalization, 3D-to-2D development.
  • Strong CAD skills (Rhino, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.).
  • Textile CAD (Gerber, Lectra, Opti Tex) preferred.
  • Adobe Illustrator proficiency.
  • Deep knowledge of fabric behavior under tension.

Preferred:

  • Experience with architectural/industrial fabrics (Serge Ferrari, Mehler, etc.).
  • Background in tensile architecture or large event structures.
  • Familiarity with load design principles and scalable product design.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Structural, Industrial, Textile, or Architectural Engineering—or equivalent experience.

Performance Expectations

  • Deliver production-ready designs with minimal rework.
  • Improve efficiency and reduce material waste.
  • Launch new products on schedule.
  • Act as internal technical authority.
