Job Summary:

Nicklaus Engineering, Inc. is seeking an Engineering Associate – Engineer in Training (EIT) to support and contribute to the professional practice of engineering across a diverse portfolio of commercial, municipal, and federal projects. This position performs professional-level engineering work requiring advanced knowledge customarily acquired through a specialized bachelor’s degree in engineering and the consistent exercise of discretion and independent judgment in the application of engineering principles.

The Engineering Associate – EIT applies engineering theory, standards, and practices to support the planning, analysis, design, and permitting of engineering systems and infrastructure, while working under the general supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer.


This is a full-time, exempt position.

FLSA Classification Justification

This position qualifies for exemption under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Learned Professional exemption. The Engineering Associate – Engineer in Training role requires advanced knowledge in the field of engineering customarily acquired through a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction, evidenced by a required bachelor’s degree in engineering and EIT certification. The position’s primary duty consists of performing professional engineering work involving the application of engineering principles, advanced mathematical and scientific concepts, and the consistent exercise of discretion and independent judgment. Duties are predominantly intellectual in nature, involve analysis and evaluation of technical data, and are not routine, clerical, or production-based. Work is performed under only general supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, consistent with professional engineering practice standards.

  • This position is expected to fulfill job responsibilities as required to meet project demands. Workdays are typically scheduled Monday through Friday, with flexibility based on project needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Employees are expected to exercise professional judgment, maintain regular attendance, and meet project deadlines. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Apply engineering principles, practices, and standards to support the design and development of civil, environmental, water, wastewater, drainage, stormwater, and erosion control systems.
  • Perform professional engineering calculations, technical analyses, and evaluations requiring the application of advanced mathematical, scientific, and engineering concepts.
  • Prepare and contribute to engineering plans, technical reports, specifications, cost estimates, and permit applications.
  • Utilize professional engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, modeling tools) to develop and analyze engineering designs.
  • Analyze technical data and exercise independent judgment in identifying design issues, evaluating alternatives, and recommending solutions.
  • Support field investigations, site assessments, and inspections, applying engineering judgment to interpret conditions and findings.
  • Ensure engineering work complies with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, consultants, and project managers to support project execution and problem resolution.
  • Communicate technical information effectively through written reports, drawings, and professional correspondence.
  • Participate in internal project meetings, contributing professional insights and recommendations.
  • Maintain and enhance professional engineering knowledge and actively pursue professional licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Perform other professional engineering duties consistent with the scope and intent of this classification.

Qualifications:

  • EIT certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in engineering software and tools relevant to the discipline.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment within established professional standards.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional engineering environment.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as required.

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal engineering regulations and permitting processes.
  • Exposure to project management tools or methodologies.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree Civil, Environmental, Electrical or closely related engineering discipline.
  • 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience, internships or cooperative education.

License and Certification Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License and Evidence of Insurability.
  • EIT certification (required or obtained within six months of hire).
