Engineer* mHIL Operation ‒ Test Benches for Wind Turbines
Who we are ...Our primary focuses at Fraunhofer IWES are on wind energy and hydrogen technologies. Our institute is home to more than 300 scientists and employees as well as over 100 students from over 30 countries pursuing careers in applied research and development at nine sites. We secure investments in technological developments through validation, shorten innovation cycles, accelerate certification procedures, and increase planning accuracy by means of innovative measurement methods. This team is looking for you ...You will join our »Process Automation and Real-Time Systems« group at our site in Bremerhaven. Here, we automate and operate various test benches for systems and components of wind turbines and electrolyzers. To create realistic test environments, we couple simulation models of other components to the DUT in real time via signal-based and mechanical hardware-in-the-loop (mHIL) methods and adapt the motor-side control algorithms accordingly. We also develop tools that allow us to automate the execution of tests, the post-processing of measurement data, and various AI methods for the wind energy sector, using an on-premises Kubernetes cluster. At present, the team consists of four research associates and several students. We support each other irrespective of our projects and backgrounds. A culture of open exchange and cooperation, even beyond team boundaries and sites, are particularly important to us. What you will doThese duties await you ...You will be responsible for the integration of our real-time turbine model, as well as for the development and integration of mHIL methodologies and model-based control procedures. Furthermore, you will maintain the drive-side converters and control the drives on our test benches. You will put the developed solutions into operation on our test benches and monitor their function during both the commissioning stage and test operation. We would be delighted to hear your ideas on the professional orientation and further strategic development of the group. No two days at work are ever the same! You will work on scientific questions in your field and publish your results in scientific publications. Additionally, you will contribute to several research and development projects and also handle the project applications. You will take over project management tasks and gradually manage individual work packages and/or research and development projects. Still want more? You will also regularly attend trade fairs, meetings, and conferences, where you will present scientific findings and technical expertise while continuously developing your personal network. What you bring to the tableWhat is your specialist background? You should have completed your diploma, master’s degree or a doctorate in Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Technology or Automation Technology/Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Embedded Systems Engineering. Do you have a specialist background in electrical drive machines, as well as classic and model-based control technology? Do you already have some experience with real-time systems and the compilation of models using real-time hardware? Are you familiar with the basics of automation? Great! Do you also have an understanding of the aeroelastics, electrical engineering, and system control of a wind turbine? Awesome! Your profile is complemented by ...Have you ever come into contact with Beckhoff automation systems? Or perhaps with the modeling and simulation environments Dymola and Modelica? Perhaps you even have experience with other programming languages? Ideally, you already have professional experience in the operation and control of large drives. That would be great, but do not worry if you don’t have all those skills in your repertoire just yet: you can also get your career off to a flying start with us too. If you do already have experience, you can expand upon it here. Here at IWES, we operate on an international level – a good command of German and English will make your day-to-day work easier.
