About the Role:
Do you thrive on hands-on technical work and the opportunity to design new systems? Are you passionate about supporting cutting edge technology that plays a vital role in environmental monitoring and industrial safety with the UK and globally?
If this sounds like you, we’d love you to consider applying for Electrical & Instrumentation Design Engineer role, focusing on our in-house manufacturer Gas Analyser Systems.
Since 1996, Protea has been leading the way in gas analysis. From our base in Cheshire, we’ve developed and commercialised innovative technologies such as FTIR, to support the online measurement of emissions, process and research gases.
We are seeking a skilled Control and Instrumentation Electrical Design Engineer to join our engineering team, focused on the design and integration of advanced gas analyser systems. You will be responsible for the detailed design of electrical and signal systems, gas routing schematics, and mechanical layout of analyser racks and cabinets. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in emissions monitoring or process analyser systems and a working knowledge of relevant industry standards.
This opportunity is ideal for someone ready to take on more responsibility and broaden their experience. As a key member of our service team, you’ll be instrumental in maintaining our world class Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and portable gas analysers. You’ll also support our global distributor and marine service network.
If you’re ready to build on your existing skills and grow with us, we’d love to hear from you!
What you’ll be doing:
• Design and produce P&IDs, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams for analyser systems.
• Develop signal interfacing, I/O schedules, and control loop documentation.
• Design gas sampling systems including tubing layouts, regulators, filters, and flow paths.
• Create general arrangement (GA) drawings for analyser racks, panels, and system enclosures.
• Specify and select components such as transmitters, flow meters, valves, and gas analysers.
• Support the integration of analyser systems into customer sites, including review of installation and commissioning plans.
• Ensure designs comply with industry standards for emissions monitoring, ATEX, IECEx, and other relevant directives.
• Liaise with in-house project managers, analyser specialists and the build engineering team to ensure seamless design implementation.
• Provide support to manufacturing, test, and service teams throughout the product lifecycle.
Required Skills and Experience:
• Degree/HND in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, or related field.

• Strong understanding of electrical and signal system design (low-voltage, 4–20mA, digital I/O, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).
• Familiarity with emissions analyser systems (e.g., CEMS, QAL1-compliant systems).
• Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or equivalent CAD software.
• Experience with gas system design including tubing schematics, component selection, and flow path layout.
• Ability to produce and interpret GA drawings for system racks, panels, and enclosures.
• Knowledge of relevant standards (ATEX, IEC 61010, EN 14181, etc.).
• Excellent problem-solving and documentation skills.
• Good communication and teamworking abilities.
