Job DescriptionJob Description
At PSI Repair Services, we solve some of industry’s toughest electronic challenges — repairing, redesigning, and validating critical systems that keep factories running, renewable energy flowing, and automation moving.
As part of a small, skilled engineering team, you’ll have end-to-end ownership of your projects — from concept to working hardware — and the freedom to design creative test and automation solutions that make a real impact for our customers.
Summary of Responsibilities
The Electrical Engineer – Test Systems Development designs, builds, programs, and validates electrical and electro-mechanical test systems used to support repair, remanufacture, and validation of complex electronic assemblies.
This role is both conceptual and hands-on. The engineer personally develops test fixtures and automation solutions, from schematic and layout design to wiring, programming, and final verification. The engineer serves as a technical resource for production and engineering teams, ensuring reliable test capability and repeatable quality for customer products.
The position requires a practical engineer who enjoys solving problems on the bench, working with technicians, and seeing a project through from concept to working hardware. Other duties may be required.
Primary Responsibilities
• Design, build, and program electrical and electro-mechanical test systems used to verify the performance of repaired and remanufactured products.
• Develop, document, and maintain automated test procedures, scripts, and calibration routines using Python or comparable programming .
• Reverse-engineer printed circuit boards and electronic assemblies to support component-level troubleshooting, redesign, and life-extension of customer equipment.
• Evaluate existing parts and systems to develop refurbishment or repair solutions, including complete system teardown to component level, creation of bills of materials (BOMs), replacement of obsolete components with drop-in alternatives, and re-assembly and final quality-control testing.
• Create new products and drop-in solutions based on customer specifications, providing equal or improved performance and quality at the required price point.
• Troubleshoot and repair test fixtures, prototypes, and customer products using standard electronic test instruments (oscilloscopes, DMMs, logic analyzers, power analyzers, etc.).
• Collaborate with production technicians and engineering staff to diagnose test failures and implement corrective actions that improve reliability and yield.
• Use CAD software (AutoCAD, OrCAD, Altium, or similar) to produce schematics, wiring diagrams, and light mechanical drawings for test systems and prototypes.
• Research, source, and maintain components and materials required for test fixtures, prototypes, and repair activities.
• Apply ESD and safety standards in all design, assembly, and testing operations.
• Document procedures and best-known methods (BKM) to ensure repeatability and knowledge transfer.
• Utilize additive manufacturing tools (e.g., 3D printing) to fabricate small fixture components or specialized parts when needed.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by recommending design or automation enhancements to reduce test time and improve data accuracy.
• Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
• Education and Experience:
o Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field; equivalent hands-on experience in electronic test system design may be considered in lieu of a degree.
o Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in electrical or electronic test fixture design, automation, and system troubleshooting within a manufacturing, repair, or product development environment.
• Technical Proficiency:
o Demonstrated ability to design, build, and program automated or semi-automated test systems.
o Strong circuit-level troubleshooting skills, including component identification, schematic interpretation, and repair of analog and digital assemblies.
o Proficiency with CAD and design software such as AutoCAD, OrCAD, or Altium Designer for schematic capture and light mechanical layouts.
o Programming experience with Python or comparable scripting/automation .
o Familiarity with common electronic test equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators, power supplies, logic analyzers, etc.).
o Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and computer-based data systems.
• Other Requirements:
o Ability to work hands-on at the bench and in an industrial environment using appropriate ESD and safety practices.
o Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
o Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
o U.S. work authorization and ability to travel occasionally to customer or vendor facilities.
Qualifications
• Experience with automated test platforms (Seica, Diagnosys/Astronics, Teradyne, or similar).
• Knowledge of RF or power electronics, including amplifiers, antennas, and impedance-matching systems.
• Experience in reverse engineering printed circuit boards and developing redesign or upgrade solutions for obsolete components or assemblies.
• Familiarity with embedded systems and device-level programming.
• Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation, test reports, and BKMs within a quality-managed environment (ISO 9001, AS9100, or equivalent).
• 3D printing and light mechanical fabrication experience for fixture development.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with technicians, production, and engineering teams on complex projects.
