JFT is growing and looking for an experienced EC&I Engineer to join our team in Loveland, CO. JFT offers some work from home flexibility, but candidates must be within commuting distance to the office. The anticipated closing date for this posting is 7/31/25 and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
Job Function:
The EC&I Engineer designs, develops, and supports electrical systems, power distribution, control logic, instrumentation, and safety interlocks for complex thermal-fluid and gas-handling equipment. This role requires a detail-oriented engineer familiar with rigorous regulatory environments, including those encountered in nuclear, defense, and industrial applications. The ideal candidate is hands-on, systems-oriented, and capable of supporting projects from concept through commissioning.
Core Duties & Responsibilities:
- Design and specify control systems architecture, including PLCs, HMIs, and safety-rated instrumentation.
- Develop wiring diagrams, panel layouts, loop diagrams, and interlock logic for process systems such as sodium loops, gas handling skids, and furnace control.
- Select and specify instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, level sensors) for high-integrity process monitoring.
- Support, manufacture, build, and validation of systems which include hydraulics, pneumatics, servos, VFD's, relays, communication networks, touchscreens HMIs, pushbuttons and robotic integration.
- Program and configure PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.) and HMIs for process automation.
- Support development of test protocols and factory acceptance testing (FAT) for control systems.
- Collaborate closely with process, mechanical, and fabrication teams to ensure integration of electrical and control elements.
- Design and implement power distribution systems, including switchgear, MCCs, and low- to medium-voltage panels.
- Ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards, including NFPA 70, IEC 61511, ISA, IEEE, and DOE/NRC safety guidance.
- Assist with documentation packages for nuclear site approvals, QA reviews, and system turnover.
- Verify and validate programs, firmware, and hardware for safety related systems per ASME NQA-1.
- Interpret client requirements, identify and address design parameters and engineering problems.
- Provide technical support to external and internal customers.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's of Science or higher in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in industrial EC&I design, ideally in regulated industries such as nuclear, defense, oil & gas, or chemical.
- Proven experience with PLC programming and HMI development.
- Familiarity with fieldbus communication protocols: Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP.
- Experience with instrumentation and control in thermal and/or gas systems.
- Proficient in CAD tools for electrical design: AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN.
- Experience with power distribution systems and switchgear design.
- Understanding of safety systems and fail-safe design principles.
- Professional Engineer or working towards achieving.
- Experience in design and testing of systems in nuclear or radiological environments.
- Possess basic business acumen and commercial awareness.
- This position requires the incumbent to work with export-controlled items.
Typical Working Conditions:
Primarily an office environment with work periodically performed in the fabrication/machine shop and outdoor testing areas. Depending on the project, there may be occasional travel to customer job sites. JFT has implemented a 9/80 work schedule, and the office is closed every other Friday.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work on a computer (standing or sitting) for most of the day and use standard office equipment. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with team members, customers, and vendors is essential. May occasionally lift and carry objects, typically under 50 pounds. At times, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing and crawling to access and inspect equipment is required.
