American Battery Solutions has a full-time opening for an Electrical Battery Engineer in Lake Orion, Michigan.

Job Summary:

The Electrical Battery Engineer is responsible for the battery system electrical requirements, architecture, and their analysis. They apply an interdisciplinary approach to the engineering of battery systems and components; what is required of the design. They analyze and drive early integration of battery electrical systems and continue to support them over the project life cycle. They define and document overall electrical architecture and schematics at the system level and oversee verification of the electrical sub-system requirements. This includes defining electrical system requirements early in the development cycle, identifying top technical risks, contributing to the design synthesis, and driving the concept verification via testing and analysis. This individual will work closely with the systems and engineering design team, prototype manufacturing team, key suppliers, validation/testing team, customers, program managers, and business development.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop electrical system architecture and schematics.
  • Derive sub-system electrical requirements and allocate to electrical architecture.
  • Develop external interface specifications for the electrical interfaces to other systems.
  • Lead cross-functional electrical system engineering meetings with other engineers.
  • Drive resolutions in the electrical systems, between customers and design engineers
  • Support the Lead Systems Engineer with electrical engineering related topics.
  • Support the DREs with their design reviews of the electrical components.
  • Analyze failure modes of electrical systems in the DFMEA; support functional safety analysis.
  • Track and prioritize top technical risks and known electrical system issues.
  • Develop electrical sub-system integration test plan and drive prototype testing and analysis.
  • Develop electrical inspection requirements for end of line testing.
  • Drive model-based analysis of the electrical battery system with CAD and CAE teams.
  • Help troubleshoot battery pack issues and support development of engineering guidelines.
  • Adhere to federal and state regulations.
  • Adhere to all company policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree.
  • Masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in HV automotive applications or similar, such as Electronic Control Units (ECUs), HV/LV power, communication, and sensory systems.
  • Preferred experience with High Voltage/Low Voltage battery systems, Battery Management Systems (BMS), Battery Disconnect Units (BDU), Power Distribution Units (PDU), wiring, controls, CAN, connectors, relays, contactors, fuses, and busbars.
  • Experience with DFMEA, PFMEA, DFM/DFA, and DVP&R.
  • Hands-on lab/shop skills (multimeters, oscilloscopes, HiPot isolation testers, LCR meters, CANalyzer/CANoe, DAQs, ect.).
  • Ability to work hands-on with High and Low Voltage Power and Communication systems.
  • Preferred experience in a requirement engineering management tool and systems engineering (e.g. Jama, DOORS) and MBSE modeling architectures.
  • Preferred experience with MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape controls and simulations.
  • Preferred experience with CAD/CAE and 3D electrical design tools.
  • Familiar with common automotive & industry standards.
  • Adept in basic data processing and statistical analysis.
  • Presents strong interpersonal communication, listening, and technical writing skills.
  • Preferred experience with the handling of high voltage lithium-ion battery systems.
  • Preferred training in High Voltage safety and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
  • Abides by safety standards and protocols.
  • Effective communicator, capable of presenting technical test data to various audiences.
  • Self-motivated problem solver who pays attention to details and drives improvement.
  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours as needed (less than 10% travel on average).
  • Ability to organize and plan effectively with project teams.
  • Basic engineering knowledge outside electrical (mechanical, software, industrial, ect.).

  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in industrial environments, and on uneven terrain.
  • Works in a temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions, and in industrial environments.
  • The noise level in the work environment can be moderately loud.
