Role Review: A DOT compliance coordinator ensures a fleet of drivers and vehicles adheres to all federal and state Department of Transportation regulations. Key responsibilities include managing driver files, coordinating drug and alcohol testing, maintaining vehicle maintenance records, developing safety training programs, and preparing for audits. This role requires strong knowledge of transportation regulations, excellent organizational and communication skills, and computer proficiency, particularly with Microsoft Office and the FMCSA's DataQ system.
Position Responsibilities:
- Driver management: Maintain driver qualification files, including physical exams, licenses, and insurance records.
- Regulatory adherence: Ensure compliance with regulations like Hours of Service, conduct random drug and alcohol testing, and manage all required permits and filings.
- Safety and training: Develop and implement safety programs, provide driver training, and perform performance evaluations.
- Vehicle maintenance: Ensure vehicles are properly maintained, registered, and compliant with safety standards, including managing inspections and maintenance schedules.
- Recordkeeping and audits: Prepare and maintain detailed records, and assist with internal and external audits and investigations.
- Reporting: Track and report on various compliance metrics, including accident data and driver logs.
- Toll Management: Keeping track of tolls.
Qualifications:
- Technical knowledge: Strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations, including Hours of Service, driver qualifications, and hazardous materials.
- Computer skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and web-based systems like the FMCSA's DataQ.
- Soft skills: Excellent communication (written and oral), interpersonal, and organizational skills are crucial.
- Experience: Prior experience in transportation, logistics, or a compliance-related role is often .
- Education: A bachelor's degree in a related field is frequently , but not required, experience could override the bachelor's degree.
Other Duties:
- Problem-solving: Resolve routine compliance inquiries and recommend improvements to management.
- Collaboration: Work closely with HR, fleet managers, and other departments to address compliance and safety issues.
- Audits and investigations: Participate in and assist with both internal and external audits.
- Research: Stay current with industry best practices and changes in regulations.
