Lead the Development of Next- Sensing, Robotic, Medical and Electronic Systems

 

USMAT, Inc. is seeking an exceptional Director of Engineering to lead our growing engineering organization and help transform innovative concepts into impactful technologies and products.

We develop advanced sensing technologies, embedded systems, intelligent electronics, and industrial solutions for government, defense, scientific, and commercial applications. As Director of Engineering, you will build and lead multidisciplinary engineering teams while driving the successful execution of research and product development programs.

This role is ideal for a technical leader who enjoys building organizations, mentoring engineers, managing complex R&D efforts, and turning ambitious ideas into real-world solutions.

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a multidisciplinary engineering team
  • Manage execution of research and product development programs from concept through deployment
  • Establish engineering processes, technical standards, and development best practices
  • Work closely with executive leadership to define technical strategy and priorities
  • Allocate resources and manage engineering schedules, budgets, and risk
  • Oversee development of sensing systems, embedded electronics, firmware, software, and industrial control systems
  • Support proposal development and strategic planning activities
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with customers, partners, subcontractors, and government stakeholders

 

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Engineering or related technical field (Ph.D. ) 
  • 10+ years of engineering experience, including technical leadership and people management responsibilities
  • Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Strong technical background in one or more of the following:
    • Embedded systems
    • Electronics design
    • Sensor systems
    • Controls and automation
    • Systems engineering
    • Product development
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to execute complex technical programs on schedule and within budget

 

Required Experience

Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Programs

Candidates must have substantial experience managing and executing SBIR-funded technology development efforts, including:

  • Phase I, Phase II, and/or Phase III programs
  • Proposal development and technical volume preparation
  • Customer engagement with DoD, Navy, Air Force, Army, DARPA, NSF, DOE, or other federal agencies
  • Transitioning technologies from research to operational or commercial applications
  • Managing multidisciplinary R&D teams in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications

  • Experience leading engineering organizations in a small business or startup environment
  • Experience commercializing new technologies
  • Program management experience
  • Patent development, intellectual property , or technology transition experience
  • Experience supporting government contracts and defense-related programs
