Job Description
Design Manager - Architectural Metalwork\n\nPosition: Design Manager\n Location: London \nSalary: Up to £80,000\n\nPurpose of the Role\n\nThe Design Manager will be responsible for leading and coordinating the design and technical aspects of projects during the preconstruction phase. This includes managing client expectations, ensuring design feasibility, developing accurate cost plans, and supporting a seamless transition from concept through to construction. The role requires strong technical expertise, commercial awareness, and the ability to build collaborative relationships with clients, architects, contractors, and internal teams.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nLead the design management process\n\nCoordinate design input from internal engineers, CAD technicians, and external consultants.\n\nReview drawings, models, and specifications for accuracy, feasibility, and value engineering opportunities.\n\nProduce and manage design programmes aligned with project schedules.\n\nProvide technical advice and solutions to clients and design teams.\n\nIdentify design risks early and implement mitigation strategies.\n\nSupport the preparation of tender submissions, including design presentations, clarifications, and technical proposals.\n\nEnsure all design work complies with current building regulations, safety standards, and accreditation requirements.\n\nMaintain strong communication with clients, architects, and main contractors throughout the preconstruction process.\n\nSkills & Experience\n\nProven experience in design management or preconstruction within construction, steelwork, or specialist subcontracting.\n\nStrong technical knowledge of structural or architectural design.\n\nProficiency in CAD and 3D modelling software Tekla / Solidworks \n\nCommercial awareness with the ability to balance cost, quality, and programme.\n\nExcellent communication and stakeholder management skills.\n\nBenefits\n\nCompetitive salary (depending on experience).\n\nOpportunities for professional development and career progression.\n\nInvolvement in high-profile and technically challenging projects.\n\nSupportive team environment with a focus on collaboration and excellence.\n\nFor more information please get in touch with Sharon O'Donnell at The Highfield Company
