Job DescriptionJob Description

Design Engineer

Location: Itasca, IL
Schedule: Full-time | Onsite | 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Compensation: $65,000 – $85,000 (flexibility for strong candidates)
Start Date: ASAP

About the Role

A growing industrial manufacturing organization is adding a Design Engineer to support increasing project demand. This is a newly created role focused on the design of custom enclosure systems used in industrial equipment and data center applications.

This position is ideal for an early-career engineer who enjoys hands-on design work, working closely with manufacturing, and seeing projects move from concept through production. Designs are customized per project but follow established engineering standards — this is not an R&D or prototyping-heavy role.

What You’ll Do

  • Design structural and internal layouts for custom enclosure systems
  • Create 3D models and assemblies using SolidWorks (or similar CAD software)
  • Produce customer approval drawings and manufacturing-ready documentation
  • Release drawings and Bills of Material (BOMs) to manufacturing
  • Coordinate layouts for internal systems such as HVAC, electrical routing, and related components
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously while meeting defined milestones
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, purchasing, and vendors to resolve design-related issues
  • Troubleshoot design issues discovered during fabrication or installation and implement corrective actions
  • Participate in design reviews, continuous improvement initiatives, and cost-reduction efforts
  • Provide occasional support to adjacent engineering groups as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline
  • 0–5 years of mechanical engineering experience (new graduates with strong internships/projects encouraged)
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals and structural concepts
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD for layouts and documentation
  • Ability to manage multiple design tasks and meet project deadlines
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing or engineered systems environment

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting custom-engineered products
  • Exposure to enclosure systems, building systems, HVAC layouts, or electrical integration
  • Familiarity with BOMs, drawing release processes, and engineering change workflows
  • Experience working cross-functionally with manufacturing and purchasing teams
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Willingness to support multiple product lines when needed

What This Role Is (and Isn’t)

✔ Project-based design work with real production impact
✔ Stable, repeatable custom designs — not experimental R&D
✔ Strong collaboration with manufacturing
✖ Not a research-focused or heavy prototyping role

Why Join

  • Newly created role due to growth
  • Stable organization with long-term growth opportunities
  • Exposure to high-volume, high-impact industrial projects
  • Clear opportunity to grow into more advanced engineering or project-focused roles
