Van Compass LLC, located in Rathdrum, ID, specializes in Mercedes Sprinter and Ford Transit suspension systems and exterior accessories. We are expanding our team and seeking reliable individuals for the position of Design Engineer.


The Design Engineer performs the A to Z development of automotive products. The position's responsibilities include participation in the development of new products and expansion of current product lines.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create detailed engineering drawings and solid models using Solid Works software.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues from manufacturers, testing of parts, or warranty returns.
  • Responsible for vehicle tear down and installation of test components.
  • Create manufacturing drawings and instructions for sample parts to fit within given parameters.
  • Work to improve existing products by analyzing failed parts and providing ideas for improvement.
  • Create sketches from inspection measurements of sample parts to perform reverse engineering. Use QC/Measurement equipment to measure sample parts to obtain and determine manufacturing dimensions and tolerances.
  • Analyzes test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
  • Confer with other functional areas or other engineering personnel and prepare design modifications as required.
  • Review manufacturing drawings for accuracy of tolerances and fitment with sample parts.
  • Work with quality team to determine inspection and test requirements.
  • Update management on project progression during frequent meetings and adjust priorities based on feedback.
  • Work with other company units to develop products and resolve technical issues.
  • Perform market research to help identify & define new product opportunities.
  • Qualify first article samples and define testing methods for production process verification.



Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • At least 3 years design experience in the Mechanical Engineering Industry.
  • Knowledge and use of QA/QC inspection equipment, including basic measurement tools, micrometers, height gage, thread gages, and dial indicators.
  • Knowledge of Mechanical drafting standards, ANSI standards and document control.
  • 3D Solid modeling experience, and/or SolidWorks experience required.


Knowledge and Personal Attributes:

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, team orientated philosophy, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple assignments at any given time while maintaining commitment to deadlines.
  • Must have outstanding communication skills in both oral and written form.
  • Understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, assembly tolerances & GD&T.
  • Ability to understand design for manufacturing.
  • Product Development experience with focus on automotive aftermarket products.
  • Proficient computer skills including MS Office and Outlook required.
  • 3D Solid modeling experience, and/or SolidWorks experience required.
  • Knowledge and experience with FEA or Simulation .
  • Understanding of metal production materials and heat treatment processes.
  • Understanding Metallurgy of steel and ability to apply knowledge with design specifications.
  • Expected to adhere to safe work practices and general safety rules to ensure employee and customer safety and high quality of work.
  • Experience with basic hand tools and fitment testing methods.
  • Ability to interface with customers and suppliers.
  • Capable of lifting/carrying 20 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs; some physical activity required.
  • Welding, laser cutting, press brake, and machining experience a plus.
