Controls Technician – Automation & Maintenance

Job Summary

The Controls Technician plays a key role in supporting automation systems, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and ensuring optimal equipment performance. This role is responsible for the installation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Test and Assembly Equipment. The position supports both local operations and cross-functional teams and reports directly to the Maintenance or Engineering leadership group.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead continuous improvement of automation processes, equipment utilization, OEE, and downtime reduction strategies.

  • Execute installation and programming of automation equipment.

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on Test and Assembly Equipment.

  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers for external repairs and equipment procurement.

  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical and electronic equipment including PLC systems, numerical controls, power supplies, motor drives, and test systems.

  • Apply deep understanding of electrical/electronic theory, specification writing, and electrical code compliance.

  • Perform equipment start-up and shutdown procedures in line with OSHA safety standards.

  • Instruct operators and technicians on safe electrical practices and operational protocols.

  • Communicate potential electrical issues and safety concerns to management.

  • Independently manage hands-on projects from start to finish.

  • Collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams across departments.

  • Execute additional tasks as assigned in support of plant operations.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required).

  • Associate degree in a technical field, apprenticeship, or technical certification ().

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a technical manufacturing role involving PLC troubleshooting and programming.

  • Hands-on experience with Allen Bradley, RSLogix, and Omron PLC systems ().

  • Familiarity with ABB, Fanuc, and Sepro robotics ().

  • Experience with vision inspection systems such as Keyence and SensoPart ().

  • Proficiency in PLC and HMI programming, Ethernet, and DeviceNet networks.

  • Ability to interpret schematics, blueprints, and engineering drawings for circuit-level troubleshooting.

  • Strong computer skills and willingness to learn new control systems.

  • Knowledge of machining, assembly practices, and fixturing.

  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects and prioritize effectively.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Capable of maintaining, updating, and troubleshooting automation control systems.

Working Conditions

  • Work performed in both office and manufacturing environments.

  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear, and use hands for extended periods.

  • Occasionally required to lift or move objects up to 25 pounds.

  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as mandated by EHS guidelines.

  • Compliant with all workplace safety protocols and substance abuse policies.

Environment, Health, and Safety Expectations

  • Adhere to EHS standards, including spill/leak reporting, safe equipment usage, and hazard communication.

  • Follow all workplace safety guidelines, including the use of protective devices, proper training, and reporting of near-miss incidents.

  • Supervisors must ensure staff follow safety procedures, use appropriate protective equipment, and are trained for equipment operation.

Security & Housekeeping

  • Adherence to facility access procedures.

  • Ensure clean, safe workspaces, with food/drink restrictions in production areas.

  • Compliance with Contractor Management Policies for site access.
