Software Engineer – Control & Automation\n\nLocation: Coventry (Head Office) | Offices also in Exeter & Stoke-on-Trent which you can work from\nSalary: Competitive + benefits\nType: Permanent | Full-time\n\nAbout the Company:\nOur client delivers large-scale turnkey solutions across the quarrying, aggregates, and industrial design & build sectors. They design, build, and maintain electrical and mechanical systems that drive safe, efficient, and sustainable production. With a strong focus on innovation and digitalisation, their integrated approach combines design, project delivery, and ongoing site support.\n\nThe Role:\nAs a Software Engineer within the Controls and Automation team, you’ll be part of a multi-disciplinary group delivering industrial control systems for large-scale material handling projects.
You’ll be involved throughout the full project lifecycle — from concept and design through to testing, installation, and on-site commissioning.\n\nKey Responsibilities:\n\n * \n\n Design, specify, and document automation systems for quarrying and heavy industrial processes.\n\n * \n\n Develop PLC and SCADA software architectures using Siemens TIA Portal, WinCC, and associated platforms.\n\n * \n\n Produce high-quality technical documentation (FDS, SDS, I/O lists, commissioning packs).\n\n * \n\n Support compliance with company procedures, UK H&S regulations, and relevant standards (BS7671, UKCA, CE, machinery safety).\n\n * \n\n Assist with control panel design, wiring diagrams, and component selection.\n\n * \n\n Conduct factory and site acceptance testing with clients and stakeholders.\n\n * \n\n Deliver on-site commissioning and operator training for new plants.\n\nAbout You:\n\n * \n\n Degree or HND in Electrical, Electronic, or Control Systems Engineering (or equivalent experience).\n\n * \n\n Proven PLC programming experience (Ladder Logic, Function Block, Structured Text).\n\n * \n\n Strong background in Siemens PLCs, SCADA, and HMI systems (experience with Rockwell, GE, or Mitsubishi advantageous).\n\n * \n\n Understanding of control hardware design, specification, and testing.\n\n * \n\n Good knowledge of industrial communication protocols – Profinet, Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, OPC UA.\n\n * \n\n Hands-on experience in commissioning and optimisation of control systems on live plant.\n\n * \n\n Excellent problem-solving skills and a collaborative approach.\n\n * \n\n Willingness to travel to customer sites (UK and occasional overseas).\n\nDesirable Skills / Experience:\n\n * \n\n Experience in quarrying, aggregates, or heavy industry material handling systems.\n\n * \n\n Understanding of OT cybersecurity and its impact on control systems.\n\n * \n\n Familiarity with functional safety standards (ISO 13849, IEC 61508).\n\n * \n\n Chartered Engineer status or working towards it.\n\n * \n\n Experience integrating OEE data capture and reporting into control architectures.\n\nWhy Apply?\n\n * \n\n Work on major industrial projects with cutting-edge technology.\n\n * \n\n Be part of an innovative, forward-thinking engineering team.\n\n * \n\n Opportunities for professional growth and development.\n\n * \n\n Competitive salary and benefits package
