Job description:

We are seeking an experienced Controller with a construction industry background to oversee the financial operations of our growing construction company. The Controller will serve as a key member of the leadership team, responsible for managing accounting, financial reporting, project cost control, and compliance. This individual will provide strategic insight, maintain strong internal controls, and ensure the company’s financial health while supporting field operations and project management teams.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

• Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and job cost accounting.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow).
• Develop project-specific financial reports to support project managers in monitoring budgets, billings, and cost-to-complete.
• Maintain accurate records for job costing, change orders, and subcontractor billings.

Budgeting & Forecasting

• Lead the preparation of annual budgets and cash flow forecasts.
• Monitor financial performance against budgets; analyze variances and provide recommendations.
• Support leadership in evaluating project profitability and business growth opportunities.

Compliance & Controls

• Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and construction industry requirements.
• Oversee preparation of annual audits and coordinate with external accountants.
• Manage insurance, bonding, and licensing requirements.
• Maintain and strengthen internal controls over financial transactions and reporting.

Strategic Leadership

• Advise ownership on financial strategy, risk management, and capital planning.
• Implement accounting software improvements and technology upgrades to improve efficiency.
• Build relationships with banks, bonding companies, vendors, and external partners.
• Mentor and supervise accounting staff (if applicable).

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA but not required).
• 5+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience; prior experience in construction industry required (job costing and WIP reporting highly ).
• Knowledge of construction accounting software (QuickBooks)

Skills:

• Strong understanding of GAAP and construction accounting principles (percentage-of-completion, retainage, etc.).
• Proficiency with Excel and financial modeling.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial staff.
• Hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a small business environment.
