Job DescriptionJob Title: Consultant Engineer – Mechanical Engineering

Location: Barrow-in-Furness. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this role

Salary: Circa £60,000

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Drive the analysis, definition, and delivery of engineering solutions that directly shape programme success and exceed customer expectations
  • Use your technical expertise to advance system and process development, taking the lead in solving high-impact engineering challenges
  • Champion technical assurance, ensuring all engineering outputs are robust, compliant, and ready for critical programme milestones
  • Build influential relationships with customers, suppliers, and cross-functional teams, acting as a trusted ambassador for engineering
  • Inspire and develop colleagues through proactive mentoring while strengthening links with key professional institutions
  • Play a pivotal role in governance as a Design Review Assessor and/or through Delegated Authority when required

Your Skills And Experiences

  • Degree qualified in relevant subject (or equivalent through experience), with Chartered status
  • Strong problem-solver with the ability to tackle complex engineering challenges and deliver innovative, high-quality solutions
  • Skilled in fluid systems engineering, including pumped compressible and incompressible flows, with solid hydraulics knowledge
  • Good understanding of marine engineering; submarine experience is highly desirable
  • Experience working on military or naval vessels, with familiarity in defence standards and operational requirements

The Mechanical Engineering Discipline Team

Join our Mechanical Engineering Discipline group and play a key role in delivering the vital ship services and life-support systems that power the UK’s current and next- nuclear submarines. You’ll work at the forefront of SSN AUKUS, while also supporting the Dreadnought and Astute programmes – tackling complex technical challenges, owning system-level issues, and solving problems that span multiple engineering domains. This role gives you the chance to lead design improvements, support critical technical troubleshooting, and build strong customer confidence through high-quality engineering solutions. You’ll also have opportunities to mentor junior engineers, develop leadership skills, and strengthen your technical expertise while influencing some of the most advanced submarine platforms in the world. We offer relocation support across all Submarine roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria
